Today i decided to smoke the Tatuaje L'esprit de La Verite. I wanted to see what a year has done to this cigar. For those of you that don't know this is a cigar that spawned from a new idea ( new to the cigar world ) Pete Johnson came up with. He is taking a page from the wine industry and creating a true farm vintage cigar. All the tobacco used in these cigars will come from one farm, all the same crop. The idea is that the blend should change from year to year based on how the crop does. The line is called La Verite, Tatuaje A.O.C .There will be two cigars in this line. The L'esprit de La Verite which is a robusto and the La Verite which is a churchill. From what i gathered the churchill will have a darker wrapper and be a bit stronger. today i smoked the smaller of the two. Here we go...
Pre light
The construction is beautiful. very well made. It's literally has no veins. No soft spots and a beautiful triple cap. It has a colorado claro shade wrapper. Not really any oils. It has kind of a rough feel to it but still just a very nice wrapper. Pre light aroma i get a sweet tobacco smell with a bit or earthiness on the draw.
1/3
I get a lot of spice on the opening. That typical pepin spice. I also am getting a nice earthy sweetness. About 5 puffs in the spice leaves. The cigar is very smooth and on the mild to medium side.
2/3
At the second third the sweet earthiness is replaced with an oak wood flavor. It still has a sweet undertone that is nice on the finish. The spice has yet to return although the cigar is moving into the medium body range at this point. The burn is absolutely perfect and each draw is producing a nice amount of smoke.
3/3
In the final third the oak wood taste is dominating and the sweet undertones have become a bit more on the creamy side. Almost that typical Cuban sweetness at times. The sweetness follows into the finish although the finish is a bit short. The flavors don't quite linger on the back of my palette as long as tatuajes usually do. I think it's because of the lack of spice. Still medium bodied at this point. The cigar managed to stay pretty cool towards the end and i was able to nub it very easily.
final thoughts...
It was a very enjoyable smoke. Not the most complex but the flavors that it did produce were enjoyable. It's a very medium mellow cigar. If you are expecting that usual tatuaje strength you are in for a surprise. Did this cigar blow me away? not really. Was it a good smoke worth buying? absolutely. If you want a cigar that is just easy to smoke and has simple enjoyable flavors than this is your cigar. But following in the idea of this line of cigars. who knows what next year will bring?
