  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Review: Tatuaje Limited Series Fausto FT114
Size: 4.5 x 52
MSRP: $8.00
Date: 20th day of January, the year 2015…..

Smoking Environment: The end of a long and relentless day that refuses to close, yet I find myself happily juggling work and family time to fulfill an endless list of obligations to the people I love. I’m hanging in BOTL chat too, which always seems to quickly prompt reflection on the different paths we take and different lives we lead. Somehow we all ended up in this chatroom; counseling, inquiring, learning, bullying, laughing, and growing closer as brothers. Truly a ‘come as you are’ room of learning and love of the leaf. So, what can I say… I’ve had an average work day (for me), but not one that I’ll soon take for granted, so this review should be fun.

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan

Appearance/construction: The petite robusto shape is not one that I visit often, although it has treated me well on those occasions. This particular stick is a medium-dark chocolate brown with a tight wrapper. The Ecuadorian Habano wrapper showing some moderate veining and consistent color. Strong triple cap and a tight pack throughout. The feel is dry with little tooth.

Aroma Pre-Light: Chocolate, pepper, and coffee bean

Cold draw:
I used a straight cut with the table cutter. The draw is WIDE open on this stick. Not a bit of resistance, so I’ll have to try not to smoke fast. Getting a lot chocolate mocha flavors.

Light:
Lights quickly with cedar.

First impression:
Not sure what I’m getting right off the bat. It is a dry sour citrus and pepper taste that sticks to the tongue. After the first puff or two it turns to the copper taste you get when sucking on a penny (you know you’ve done it). Interesting….. let’s see where this goes.

Aroma Post-Light: Cedar and leather.

First Third: The “penny” flavor fades immediately into a cedar and dry habanero with some underlying lime flavors floating underneath the tongue. Huge amount of smoke production from this little stick, and a tiger striped ash. The retrohale is all sweet red pepper covered in black peppercorn with an earthy backdrop. The ash is holding together nicely for such a small stick. Wonderful flavors and smoke volume in this first third. Looking forward to getting some of the chocolate and coffee I picked up in the aroma but not sure if it will make an appearance this early. Some uneven burning as I move into the second third, but nothing worth correcting at this point. Medium smoke and body thus far.

Second Third: The profile deepens into dark leather and earth flavors. Ash is still holding on tight and back to burning straight as an arrow. The retro is evolving into a spicy red pepper. Still no heat on this stick at all. A nice cool smoke unleashing copious amounts of smoke and still a wide open draw… construction is top notch. The ash finally drops at the halfway mark of the stick. I just got a taste of minerals and soil, not to be mistaken with earth. It lasts no more than five draws and disappears with haste. The “red” flavors are beginning to fade as I near the last third and starting to feel a small level of heat, which is nothing compared to other sticks with this “open” of a draw.

Final Third: At long last… this cigar teased me with the cold aroma and now I’m finally picking up dark chocolate and coffee over the earthy peppercorn back drop and spicy retro. Very little heat still but the smoke volume has decreased to an average level. The burn is slightly uneven and dropping in certain spots but it seems to have stayed fairly even has self-corrected. I’m nubbing at this point and am loving the plethora of flavors in this last third. The retro has gotten to be too much for me. This is full bodied smoke in the last third, and very enjoyable.

Overall Impression/Final Notes: Great flavor profile and very complex. Flavors ranging from earth, citrus, cedar, black peppercorn, spicy red pepper, leather, chocolate, and coffee. Unbelievable complexity and a wonderful smoke. A big thanks goes to Eddy (ENV) for bombing me with this stick.

Smoke time: 1hr10m
Scoring:

Appearance and Presentation: 18/20
Lighting and Burning Properties: 12/15
Construction Properties: 29/30
Taste Properties: 34/35
Total: 93/100

Author’s Note: As always, I welcome any constructive criticism so that my reviews can continue to grow in strength and depth. I will try my best to review sticks that have not been previously reviewed here and that are generally “available,” unless they are gifted/requested review sticks. As a service to my brothers, I intend to write with as much detail as I can muster, and with an honest opinion. However, it is only MY opinion, so please try a stick before you buy a box if you have any intention of being fiscally responsible with this beloved affliction for fine tobacco that we all have. Also, all cigars are kept humidified at 68%. Thanks for reading!

This was a release for Federal Cigar back in 2012, I believe, and may have been a full release after that. I dont think they are around anymore but you may be able to trade with some brothers if you put up an ISO. I usually do currently available selections, but this was a request by @ENV. Thanks for reading guys! If someone has more information on these or knows somewhere that still has some, please chime in and correct me if needed.
