  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Oh man, what a day. Ex-wives, custody issues, and dumbass new husbands. Sometimes it just gets to be too much. To keep focus on the important things and knowing that others depend on me, I have to take a timeout. To keep from thinking that all people are just evil and self centered, I have a smoke and try to recall something good that somebody, anybody, did. And tonight that goes out to Jarrod at Texcigars.com.

Awhile back I saw a post here about Texcigars.com. I went there and noticed he had a unique smoke called Olar Del Cibao. I promptly ordered a sample. The package was great and included a water pillow to keep the sticks fresh. I let them sit for a couple of days and then tried one out. I want to say it was the dark maduro, but I can't remember. It started really good, but started leaking tar towards the end of the smoke. A second stick did the same. They were still very good tasting up to that point, so I gave the brand a neutral review on his site.

I posted the review very late at nite, but within an hour I had an email from Jarrod apologizing! He offered to send me some more cigars to make up for the couple I had a bad experience with. I took up his offer and am happy to say that I have not had any leakage since. When the package arrived, I had an email from him before I could walk downstairs and pick the package up! Kinda creepy, but reassuring at the same time. I was raised to do the right thing and take care of the people that keep you in business. Jarrod really takes that principle to heart and I cannot say enough good things about his customer service.

So tonight I grabbed a torpedo and headed outside for some quiet time. There is something about the Olar Del Cibao's that comforts me. They are not a particularly strong or extreme smoke. I do not detect a lot of subtleties to the taste. But neither are they mild and bland. I really see myself making room in the humidors for these to be an every-day smoke. Nothing super special, but something that I cannot wait to come home to. Kind of like a good wife, I guess.

This torpedo had a little unraveling on the cap, but to make issue with it would be pretty picky. The Connecticut shade wrapper was smooth with very thin veins. The stick was somewhat harder than normal, not very spongy. The roll seemed very tight. The light was easy and the burn very even the whole way through. Ample smoke.

I do not normally like the lighter cigars. Being an ex-cigarette smoker, they remind me too much of those nasty little things. But these torpedoes have a taste all their own. I would say that it is mostly a taste of toast with a slight hint of cedar. Sprinkle just a dash of pepper on it and you have a match. The taste seemed relatively constant though the whole cigar. Whether this is true or my mind was just on other things, I cannot say. I did smoke it to the nub. And the ash - oh the ash! It was a marvel to look at. Long and sturdy. Light colored with perfect ripples of grey, like looking out over the stormy ocean. The ash took me away to a better place and then brought me home safely.

So there you have it. Not only was the smoke good, but the company that brought it to me was great. It sometimes amazes me that a good deed done thousands of miles away can have a such a dramatic effect. Texcigars, with an action taken weeks ago, turned an otherwise crappy day into being OK. A great reminder that there are still people out there doing the right thing. I don't know if Jarrod will ever stumble across this, but if he does, a huge kudo's and a personal thank-you goes out to him and his company.

THANKS!
~Neil~

Sorry, new here, did I say something wrong? I had a bad day, got it off my chest. Smoked a good cigar and remembered a good deed. It cheered me up. Hope I didn't come off as a shill or something.
