  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Had the chance to get 2 bottles of this fine scotch last week so I jumped at the chance.

I would say that this is the finest that the distillery has to offer. I've had a glass of most they have bottled but the 21 is the one I keep going back for.

The Balvenie 21 is not really a double cask but it does mature in Tradtional Oak and finishes in Portwood. The Taditional Oak casks used for maturation leaves a nice subdued canvas for the few months that the Portwood does while this scotch finishes.

I drank this dram neat, water or ice would ruin it for me as the 21 is very mellow and the alcohol is almost not present at all. The nose is like molasses with a slight citrus note...pleaseant and not cloying taste. The finish is a little on the long side with a very distinct Port note.

It's a little on the pricey side - Utah state liquor board has it listed for $199.00 in all of it's stores but you might be able to find it lower (around $150ish).

Well worth the purchase though.

I haven't tried the 21 y/o yet, but the Single Barrel 15 y/o is pretty damn good, and thanks to my good friend Chris (Phi Delt), I have a bottle of Isle of Jura Superstition for the holidays.

You talked about drinking it neat, when I stopped putting ice and/or water in my scotch I developed a much greater appreciation for it.

This sounds amazing! I'll keepy eyes open for some.

I always put ice mine. Maybe it's that I haven't developed a palate for it yet, or maybey the stuff I buy is too cheap and therefore needs to be cut a bit. I do find that it is less harsh on my palate either during or after a cigar, though.

I had the doublewood and it was a great scotch for the money. I'll have to try the others.

Adding water really depends on which whisky, some taste a lot better when you add some. And some it just dilutes it. Theres no shame in putting a splash of water or a few ice cubes, its all personal preference.

For my own preference, there are some whisky's that really opens up with ice or water - they are too subtle to drink neat, others that loose some of the kick if it's given a cube or splash. There isn't any one way to drink a whisky, it's all about how it tastes to you.

I may have to give this a try sometime, after I purchase the rums that are on my list. I see they have it at 150 a bottle at my old local haunt.
