So, I stumbled across this article online http://recessionartshows.com/999 and was utterly shocked.
It talks about an art show where the artist went around the city of Detroit doing paintings of houses and buildings. The hook of the art show was that the paintings would sell for $500 or under. Included in that purchase price however, was both the painting AND the house or building that was the subject of it...land, building and all.
I had NO idea how far that city had fallen, and did a bit more digging online. I came across this youtube series (which I think was done by the BBC) that I found interesting as well http://www.youtube.com/user/RobFinlay#p/u/13/ReqG6qbx_c0
As I say, I was hit particularly hard by this, I guess mainly due to my ignorance of the problem. This city (though I live in Canada) is a mere 90 minute drive from my front door. It is in the most powerful, prosperous nation on the face of the earth...HOW could this not be a massive national issue? Someone in the documentary compared the demise of Detroit to Hurricane Katrina and 9/11, just with more casualties and less media/public attention...
Anyway, I learned a ton today just by reading and watching these items, so I wanted to share it with you guys.
