A couple of nights ago, I had a chance to sit down, watch a movie, and enjoy one of the new El Triunfador #3s. I had one of the #4s, from the gift pack from NHC, and really enjoyed it. I just didn't take the time to make some notes on it. I really dig the CG size, so thought I would do a review of the #3 instead.
The new El Triunfador has a nice brown wrapper, slightly oily, with a few noticeable veins. The head had a perfect triple cap, which cut nicely with my Palio. The pre-light draw had a slight grass flavor, with a little sweetness, kind of like honey.
The foot lit without issue. The first third of the stick had flavors of the same grass and not-so-subtle flavor of honey that I could taste pre-light. Like some have said, there is indeed a flavor non-unlike graham crackers. The cigar burned very well, needing no touch ups at all. It had a nice white ash, with a razor edge.
Moving into the second third, the grass flavor changed to a more of a woody flavor. Honey was still present, and there were notes of cinnamon and nutmeg mixed it. Very good flavor change. The wood flavor tends to dry the tongue, but the honey and the spices did a good job of making my mouth water. The burn still offered up a nice white ash, and razor edge.
Moving to the final third, the wood flavor disappeared and brought about a dry leaf profile. The honey, mixed with cinnamon and nutmeg continued, and the graham cracker flavor came back. The burn just continued to keep the razor edge, requiring no touch-ups.
I was able to pretty much nub this stick to the point the smoke burned my lips and the stick burned my fingers. Overall, I really enjoyed this cigar, and would recommend it to anyone. This medium body, full flavor stick very much reminded me of a couple of ISOMs that I have had a chance to smoke. The cigar lasted me about an hour and fifteen minutes.
Looking forward to trying a couple of the other sizes...my next one is the #1.
