  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Thinking about pipes again....

Been thinking over the years about getting into pipes but when I found out how much was involved in seasoning them and building the cake up, etc. I stopped. Then someone suggested that I pick up a clean, used pipe that's already conditioned. They told me that from that point on, it's mostly a matter of keeping it clean. Might take the plunge in Mid-Sept when my paychecks start coming in from my new job. Can anyone give me advice on how much I should pay. Not looking for anything elaborate, just enough to get me started. Any advice?

Yes. Cob. And newbie trade.
Also, if there's a CVS in your area, stop in now. They're dropping all tobacco products and clearing out at 75% off. Got me some MM cobs under $2/ea, and some drugstore baccy at pennies on the dollar!
I didnt know this!

Headed to CVS for lunch today! :)

I see several new cobs in my future! :)

They arent putting ronsons/lighters on sales too are they???? :)

If you want a good new pipe Nording usually smokes great from the start. $60-70 range and they are beautiful.
Or Dr. Grabow - they're usually around the $30 mark. Granted, I only have one and, although it smoke quite nicely*, I don't know if that can be made as a general, across-the-board statement.

(* I am still a newb myself, so the fact the *I* think it smokes well plus $2.50 will get you a cup of coffee.)

Don't over think it bro. Cobs are a great start and don't really require the same break in as a briar. It's about enjoyment. If it becomes a chore you are doing something wrong.

I understand what u went thru. To make a short story long, I bought a new peterson. I tried and tried to break it in properly. Major fail. I never enjoyed a single bowl out of it. Still dont. Asked an old timer how to break in a pipe. He snarled with a Nording stuck in his mouth, "pack it and smoke it." Since then I don't even bother with breaking in pipes. I pack and smoke. A pipe is a vessel in which to smoke tobacco. I don't get caught up in this pipe or that or building cake or breaking in. My fav pipes these days are pipes that I paid next to nothing for used.

Cobs are the best way to start. Cheap and easy to use.
