  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

    Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Please help me understand what makes a pipe "smoke well".

I have only smoked from two pipes and they seem fine to me, although they whistle a bit, which seems normal to me, so what exactly does a pipe do when it smokes poorly?

Other than cosmetics and a straight drill hole, what exactly do i need to look for in a good briar pipe?
Do whatchu mean by "this pipe smokes well"?

I'm sure some with more experience will chime in, but a draft hole drilled too high will cause them the gurgle, and always smoke wet. This can be remedied by pipe mud. One of my cobs was like this, but after some cigar ash, spit, and a little time, was corrected easily enough. Curious to what others will say.

Always heard you should only smoke a pipe once a day to give it time to dry/air out. Also cleaning it well to make sure no remaining tobacco bits are in it. Clean after each smoke.
I've heard that as well but I often wonder how true it is. All the old timers I know/knew that smoked pipes only had one or two and they smoked them often.

Yeah, but "old timers" also keep their cigars in tubos on their desk for months at a time, or in the refrigerator, or in a humi with a piece of apple, so...

Very true. Which brings up the other thought I had on the one or two pipes that get smoked a lot.... Maybe they smoked so much they couldn't taste anything anyway so it wouldn't matter?

@bostoneo @StogieNinja

I am referring solely to the craftsmanship of the pipe. I have read volumes of opinions on the pipe rest thing, but i see people describe pipes themselves as "good smokers" but ill be damned if i know the difference when ive only tried two pipes (both Moonshine) and have zero clue what to look for in a pipe outside cosmetic factors.
People talk about $900 pipe turds, etc. And great $50 piped, but dont elaborate on the difference.
