  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

    Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Okay so I think I packed my first bowl a little light... so here are a couple questions;

Should the draw have some good resistance?

If the pipe goes out, you can still relight it right?

About how often should you need to puff it?

Other tips?

I am new as well. I have had a ton of luck here of late with very few if any relights needed. I was told to sip and get your cadence right and the right time to sip/puff is right before it goes out. I struggled with packing and I was definately too light. The trick I have been using is two fingers over the bowl and drawing to get it back going. I have also started letting my baccy dry out for 10-15 minutes before packing. I only pack a half bowl because temps are cold, then I put a small pinch of loose on top. Give it a light, tamp, then two fingers over the bowl and get it going. A couple sips every minute or two to keep it going. Set the pipe down between puffs as well. It helps keep it from getting too hot.

To be honest I fill the bowl up pack it to 1/4 then fill again pack to 1/2 then top it off and use my thumb to pack it level. Light it and go. I dry my baccy in the microwave for 5 sec at a time till its right humidity for me. Depending on the baccy I might relight once or 2 times. Relighting doesn't bother the flavor.

The way I was taught many years ago was to fill the pipe by thirds. The first third, pack with the strength of a baby, the second third with the strength of a woman, and the last third with the strength of a man. Sprinkle a few loose pieces on top, then light. If it seems to be going out, instead of reaching for the lighter, tamp it very lightly while drawing. This will often eliminate the need for a relight. If it does go out, let it sit for a minute, then repeat the lighting and tamping process as needed. Hope that helps.

Practice practice practice, u tube helps you just get a feel for it after a while as it how tight or loose to pack and how dry it needs to be, I recommend starting with cobs they're more forgiving pack it a little lighter and dry it a little more than you think it should be, and gentle tamping as you smoke.... But everybody is a little different and I still don't get some tobaccos, relights are common, if you start to get some tongue bite stop..... It will be worse later

But mostly trial and error for you it gets easier and the ritual is half the fun, when I don't want to think about it I smoke a cigar

Yes, the pipe should offer some resistance when packed. Look up the Frank Method of packing on Youtube. This method helped me out most when just starting out.

Both cadence and relights are going to depend on the tobacco you're smoking. The biggest dangers to smoking too fast is the tobacco will not produce as much flavor and worst case you get a nasty case of tongue bite. This is especially true with Virginias. Some tobacco, like Prince Albert, stays lit relatively easy, while others, like Peterson Irish Flake, can seem downright fire retardant.

As Whtwtrman has pointed out, practice makes perfect.
