  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Gentlemen,

I've been watching a number of videos on YouTube about pipe smoking and have recently attempted (for the second time) to get into the hobby. This second effort has been much more enjoyable but I have some questions about how you all store your tobacco. First, I've read that pipe smokers who plan on storing tobacco for long periods of time use mason jars or other glass jars that are somewhat air-tight. What do you use for the blends that you plan on smoking now? In most videos, it seems that plastic bags are the norm, but I'm sure these guys smoke more than I do. Right now I've got a few ounces from my local B&M along with two or three open cans that I'm working my way through in shoe boxes. Please advise if I'm doing something wrong. This inability to properly maintain tobacco for short periods of time make it hard to try multiple blends. Thanks guys!

Just remember that unlike cigars you want to store pipe tobacco at a very low RH. I dont smoke my pipe a lot as its a pain in the a$$ compared to cigars but I keep mine in a cheap air tight glass jar and its always good to go.

Thanks for the advice, bro. That may be my only option at this point. I thought it would be like cigars, in that I'd be able to buy and try multiple blends at once but I guess that's a NO GO. I'll work my way through what I have now, but while I think I've gotten to the point where my "ritual" is no longer a PIA, buying full tins of tobacco just to try them sucks.

I haven't participated in any cigar trades yet, but is there an active pipe tobacco trade system?

Check out your local, most of the time you can get a large glass jar that holds about a pound. I have one half full that has to be about a year old and it still tastes good. I did however put a few strips of ceder in there to pull some of the RH out and keep things even. I don't know if that is right or wrong but it seams to be working.

Hey Mo,

I've got about 15-20 pounds of pipe tobacco cellared away. They always stay in airtight containers, whether they are aging (in which case they stay unopened for the period of desired aging) or they are being smoked (they get opened up anytime I want a little). Just remember, low RH, low light, room temp, always sealed (unless you pop it open to smoke).

Some blends will dry out faster than others, if you are smoking a flavored cavendish (vanilla flavor or something of the sort) it will tend to stay very wet. Unflavored tobaccos can easily dehydrate.

Great advice! I smoke a pipe all the time and I agree!

All my tobacco with the exception of some christmas cheer I recently got, I keep my tobacco in its original container. I haven't been smoking a pipe long, but this has worked for me do far.
