Here is a new review we did for the Cigar King blog on the Torano Master Maduro.

The Carlos Torano Cigar company has been in the cigar business a long time. Dating back to 1916 in pre-revolution Cuba, the company started at the hands of Santiago Torano as he bought and sold tobacco leaf. Eventually, he brought his brothers over from Spain and they expanded in the growing and manufacturing of cigars. The family business would continue until Castro took over power in the 1958 Cuban Revolution and soon after the Torano family spread throughout the tobacco growing world. You could find Torano’s in Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Panama and various other tobacco rich cultures. What began as a family of tobacco growers continues to this day as a full manufacturer of cigars, from seed to stick as they say. The newest line from this near century old company is the Carlos Torano Master Maduro and that is our topic today.

Appearance: The Habano Maduro wrapper on this Torano Master Maduro is so dark and oily, it is just succulent looking. The oils are so present, the cigar has a slight sheen to it under the light. It isn’t very heavy in the hand but feels solid to the touch. The band was very well designed on this in my opinion, a deep red and black with gold highlights and the words Master and Habano Maduro in gold, along with the Carlos Torano logo.

Pre-light Aroma: The Torano Master Maduro has a distinct smell of barnyard and hay both on the sides and foot. The foot always gives hints of spice, I suspect mostly from the Habano wrapper which tend to be a spicier varietal of tobacco. Once clipped, the Torano Master Maduro tasted of caramel and an almost oak like woodsiness. The spice from the foot was not apparent on the cold draw. The draw itself was effortless, almost to easy for my personal preference.

Now with the pre-light festivities out of the way, lets get to smoking this Torano Master Maduro. With the draw being so nice and easy the cigar lit quickly with the single flame table torch I used. Right off the bat your senses are hit with a spicy taste that quickly coats the palette. Floods of smoke are coming off this Torano Master Maduro, both on the draw and from the lit foot. The woodsy aroma from the dry draw is evident in the background with the spice really adding a nice dimension to the smoke. Each puff delivers loads of flavor that lingers just long enough to make you want more without puffing too quickly.

Midway through the spice and wood flavors have backed off and now the maduro is shining through. Sweet caramel and baking cocoa are at the forefront now. The hay and grass flavors are slightly evident in the retrohale and on the back end. The change came on abruptly and it was not a subtle transition which actually caught me off guard. This Torano Master Maduro is holding a decent ash. Not flaking real bad and holding for about ¾ of an inch before I ash it myself.

Towards the end of the cigar the spice creeps back in and meshes very well with the sweetness from the maduro. I always tend to like this flavor combo, the sweet and spicy just works for me so well. The flavors lingered on the palette just long enough to keep me interested but not so long as to interfere with the next puff. Overall I would say this Torano Master Maduro lives up to it’s predecessor’s high bar but in a completely different way. Fans of the original Torano Master will find this different enough to enjoy both while maduro fans will enjoy the ride this takes you on.

Cigar King Staff Quotes:

-Josh “A nice addition to the already well done Torano portfolio.”

-Joe “The spice to sweet transition was a nice surprise. Not too strong but strong enough to hold up after a big dinner.”

-Gary “Very heavy and spicy to start, but smoothed out nicely”

-Paul “Definitely stronger than the original Master. Great if you like medium-full!”

-Kole: “Spicy and sweet, a great combo.”

Liked the flavors of this one but had some serious draw issues. Tasted a bit like the EPC Dark Rituals at a much smaller price point.
