  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Hey, my lighter and cutter broke recently and so I have no ability to enjoy cigars on my own, which is disappointing since I just got over my colds. I have a college budget and would like some suggestions for a good torch lighter that can be used in most places and doesn't eat up butane like a whore, as well as a good guillotine cutter that I won't have to make double cuts with which ruins my cigars as my current one before breaking required of me.

Obviously price is important. Suggestions and where to find them would be useful!

I use the Ronson Jetlite and love it. They're inexpensive (~ $4-5 bucks most places), they don't eat a lot of fuel in my experience, and can be found at many Wal-Mart (or similar) stores. I've yet to have to replace any that I've bought, but I've bought several over the last few years just to have one on hand whenever I need one (I like to forget where I put things). I also don't have to worry about replacing one if I loose it or it breaks.

I have a Palio cutter and I love it. I know that those probably aren't considered cheap, but really there is not substitute for a good cutter. I went through several cheapies before getting the Palio and I should have just gotten the Palio and been done with it. That said Xikar makes a good cutter too. Now I'll tell you this...I have the camo pattern and got it from CBid for about half the cost I found at all the retail places. I was patient and bid on several auctions before finally winning the one I did. So that would be my recommendation for a cutter.

That said I see King Kill sent you a PM so I suspect you may already be taken care of.

I have found that a V-cut is a much friendlier cut & no loose tobacco like a normal cut. They can be found very cheap, I use Xikar VX V cut. That is on the expensive side of your budget. Next time you are in your local B&M try a v-cut, they always have them out for customers as option to use. As far cheap lighters go, too many to name. Stick with a single torch if you do not want it to eat butane as you mentioned.

Do you use the V-cut regardless of the ring gage or are there certain sizes you will use another cutting method?

I generally smoke 50-54 gauges, these are non-issue. Not great for 60 gauge for the Xikar V, but rarely go there. It does work well on torpedoes, but I prefer a traditional cut for those. I find in general sometimes the cap would flake/crack with guillotine, almost never happens with a v-cut.

It looks like I still have to find one after all. As for cutters, the problem is that I currently don't have anything and the free ones for use at the two places near here are utterly overused and damaged. So it just seems to be a cycle of poor cuts. I just spent a lot of money getting my computer fixed up for school, so my finances are down.

In the case of the Jetlite I've never found one near here. I would definitely like to get a good cutter but cigarbid seems to require you get on in the early part of a deal and who knows how long that'd take. I do like the idea of having a Xikar, but they seem tricky to hold unless the finger hole ones amd they are also expensive. So right now in need to somehow find a new cutter and lighter and I'd prefer it be before the twelve just not sure what to go with. I want something of quality but not expensive, so not sure what that translates to for both.

someone near you carries the jetlite.. you just have to go out and look for one... theyre carried by walmart, walgreens, CVS, tractor supply, and a multitude of other places..

they really are the best value in torches (IMO)... Ive never paid more than $4.50 for one (I think thats what they go for at walgreens around here).. and I have yet to kill one.. Ive left them outside in the rain for days at a time.. dropped them.. carried them all over the globe.. etc.. and they just keep working..

I also fill them with cheap fuel (ronson or zippo that I pick up at walgreens or wherever) and never have a problem with that either..

Ive got a half dozen much more expensive torches.. other than my butane converted zippo (favorite torch).. the ronsons get used much more often than the rest... I keep one in my truck.. keep one in my desk drawer.. keep one in my travel bags.. etc.. there is always one within reach..

For cutting.. there are several cheap/free options...

biting works.. so does a sharp pocket knife..

another option is to pick up a low end punch.. most B&M's carry cheapies for less than $3...

I use punches like I do the ronsons... keep one in the truck.. keep one in the travel bags.. keep one in the desk drawer.. etc..

I prefer a guillotine cutter... but keeping a punch around is cheap and easy...

If you're looking for a cheap cutter that works well, here is a link to a V-cutter on Amazon. $3.15 with free shipping. http://www.amazon.com/Cigar-Cutter-...&qid=1386084806&sr=8-16&keywords=cigar+cutter I have one of these and it is still working great after 2+ years. I recently bought the Xikar V-cutter for substantially more money and went back to this one because it works better (believe it or not).

The Ronson JetLites are your best buy for inexpensive well performing lighters. They are generally around $3 and you can find them at pretty much every WalMart by the checkouts. Just look in the express lane checkout where they sell their cigarettes and you will more than likely find them.

So basically for $6-$7 you should be able to afford a fairly decent lighter and cutter. Sounds affordable (even on a ramen noodle college budget) to me....

Well I actually still haven't found the box with all my lighters since I moved to AZ. Been using cedar but its getting windy. So I think I'm gonna go get a Ronson lol. I always figured they suck but look at these testimonials. I can't pass it up now. Lol. To the OP: if this many botl say somethings solid. Its solid. Give it a go. Any Wal-Mart has them.

I am with most others here that you can not go wrong with a Ronson, for the price point its one to put up against the greats ;) This is my go to work horse lighter. Walgreens shows them on their site but they don't ship them, click here.

Also if you like a soft flame over the torch a pack of 3 ronson refillable soft flames can be had for around $3 as well. I have found these at major drug stores such as Walgreens and CVS.

I have also not had problems with using cutter such as cuban crafters perfect cuts. Click here to see what they carry. Prices range from $3.99 and up, but great little cutters to have around.

These also rock!

Yodis sent me a three pack probably 6 months ago...

they have become my go-to pipe lighters.. like the torches, you cant kill them.. they are super reliable.. you can feed them anything (I use cheap ronson or zippo fuel in these too..)... and are dirt cheap..

Yup, they are my go to soft flame and pipe lighter. Only thing is I have to dig around for them as the wife has stolen most of mine!

The Xikar teardrop cutters are a great value. I got one from my Santa two years ago and it is still sharp. I use it probably 75% of the time. I have a pair of folding Xikar scissors I like a lot as well.

1. Ronson JetLite at your local drugstore, $4. Best $4 you will spend, ever.
2. Cuban Crafters perfect cutter, $13 shipped on eBay. These cutters are cheap and fantastic, basically the Ronson of cutters. I keep one in each car and one on my front porch table.

The Ronson JetLites are great, however, make sure to use a quality fuel like Vector. I've found (ironically) that using the cheaper fuel such as Ronson will diminish its performance and ultimately ruin the lighter.
