BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I love Ubuntu and it just keeps getting better with each release.
I am running one of our in house webservers on Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and have a couple desktops running 7.04. Couldn't be happier with any of them.
I'm glad someone out there is still letting us think for ourselves.

I think ubuntu broke my computer. Right after installing it (6.10), I started having problems with the graphics on my computer. It works, but I have some weird booting behaviors where it can't decide if it wants to be widescreen or normal.
Oh well, who cares, I will install 7.04 anyways...I definitely like Ubuntu!!!

I just intalled 7.04 "Feisty Fawn" on my Dell inspiron 4000 laptop, and I love it. Unfortunately, every 5 minutes or so it pegs the processor at 100% and makes it unusable for about 45 seconds or so, (which is annoying as all hell, so back to knoppix for a while......).
Everything else works great, including my wireless card which was detected and configured during the install. My ATI graphics card was also detected and "just worked". It's an older laptop, so I can't really use any of the Compiz/Beryl eye candy, but I am still impressed with this release. Hopefully Cannonical can figure out the problem with the processor soon, as I really would rather run Ubuntu on that machine rather than XP.
Good job to all the Ubuntu coders, this flavor of linux is getting better all the time.

What graphics card do you have?
It's integrated into the motherboard on my laptop. I think it's an IBM graphics card.
I think it's a bigger problem, I deleted ubuntu, erased my MBR and repaired the windows boot record and it still doesn't work 100% of the time.
I have checked the bios and found no problems, it's really weird. It's late so I will check some other things tomorrow and if all else fails, I will take it to Best Buy and make them fix the damn thing...if they will honor their extended warranty (aka scam warranties). They will probably come up with some sorry ass excuse as to why they can't fix it, and turn it into my fault...They've done it once already! Luckily at that time, it was still under the manufacturers warranty and they (the manufacturer) fixed it, no questions asked.

Ubuntu Linux OS
Ubuntu is great. My home now has 3 systems, no Windows. My wife had no problem with the switch.
My sister bought an old Dell desktop PIII 600 used from a company fire-sale. I put Ubuntu on it for her. She's very pleased.

I actually prefer FreeBSD myself but for support reasons we keep any systems belonging to the company on Ubuntu. Which I much prefer to RedHat or some other stinky flavor.

I used the cd. More often than not when fiddling around with stuff I'll break something and have to reinstall. Hope I don't do that with the laptop. I have a slightly older machine that should run it just fine, I'll do all of my experimenting on that one.
It's a Soyo Firedragon motherboard with a PIII 1.2ghz 400fsb with 512mb of memory. It was starting to show it's age running XP, but it should run great with Ubuntu.
Someday I'll even hook it up to the internet.

Ok, so I had to get get rid of the Feisty install, for reasons I mentioned above. I reinstalled win2k pro, but now for some reason whenever I close the lid on the laptop it loses power and dies.
When I open the lid I have to hit the power button to turn the machine back on, and then it has to run chkdsk to fix errors on the hard drive because it went through a hard shutdown.
I have been looking through the Dell forums, and can't find any topic which even comes close to my symptoms and I was wondering if anyone could steer me towards a solution? I am almost certain it is a hardware problem. I never had any problems configuring my power settings before, and I have tried every one of the options on the control panel.

Could be a short. I have seen that before.
On the other hand there could be a setting in the BIOS giving you this issue.
What model is the Dell? We are still about half Dell half IBM shop so I might be able to help further if I had a model #
