Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada are common local options. Looking at spending less than $15000. Options in that price range are about 10-11 years old with 110k to 125k miles.
Need third row and to tow our runabout for family vacations.

Which of these models has the best reputation? Watchouts?

Amongst those options, I think the Tahoe offers the best all-around package.

If you're still contemplating alternatives, I think Mazda is absolutely killing it in recent years. But I'm not sure what the tow rating is for the CX7 and CX9. Give them a close look if you're so inclined.

2008-2012 Cadillac Escalade for basically the same price as a Tahoe. My mom has been driving Cadillacs for 20 years and we have loved every single one!

Suburbans Tahoe's and blazers all suffer either transmissions problems or bad engine designs or I ainr meant to own a Chevy cause everyone I've owned the past 25 years never lasted. And ive had all 3 models.
I just got done replacing the engine in my blazer and it only had 165000 miles one it and it wasnt cheap. They had to rip the whole thing apart front to back just to get the old engine out.
I own a 94 ranger that's got over 270000 and still running. And I. Not kind too it at all. Its beat to hell. I use it to go to and from work. Little 2.3L 4 cylinder with manual transmission.
If you go Ford get the v8. Their v6 is shit imo.

I owned an Expedition for 13 years and it had 173,000 miles. No major issues except normal wear and tear maintenance. I got rid of it a few years after the kids got through growing up and graduated college. Then I downsized SUVs to a smaller 2016 VW Touareg V6 diesel. If I needed a big SUV I wouldn’t hesitate buying an Expedition.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I looked at the Sequioa and they are about +$5000 for equivalent year/mileage, so I excluded them from my search early on. I think the CX-7/CX-9 are not full size, so also excluded. There are 5 of us total. Me and SWMBO, 3 boys 14,12,9, so I prefer to have as large a 3rd row as possible to accommodate growing boys.

Used Tahoes are everywhere here, so might be able to swing a better deal on one of those. The Expedition is not as common, but is generally priced better.
No comments on the Armada? There are a few for sale around here and they are priced only slightly higher than the Tahoe. They are sharp looking.

Ended up buying a 2007 Suburban. LTZ/Z71. Nice ride and in good shape. 128k miles. After investigating, Suburbans run a few grand less than comparable Tahoes. It has the 5.3 engine + 4 speed transmission. Leather captain's chairs. Its been cared for over the years.

Thanks everyone!

Nice find. That 5.3 should last you a good while. I have a 03 Silverado at 260k and still going strong. I’d drive it coast to coast without a second thought.
