  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

LigaPrivadaFanboy recommended the Xikar V cutter to me and I picked one up on the cheap. For smaller RG stuff, especially lances, it's great. I love it. I've had no problems with wrappers coming undone.

I will occasionally use a V Cut though I am normally a straight cut guy. I use V Cuts mainly on Liga Privadas because it's the only way I've found to actually avoid the cap from unravelling while smoking it. So I have had 0 issues with wrappers coming off with V Cuts and I actually use them to avoid that issue. :)

About 6 months ago I bought one of these.

My thought process was that I would try out a $4 V-cutter to see how I liked a V-cut it before I dropped $40 on a Xikar cutter. I discovered that I like the v-cut for box pressed and small ring gauge cigars so I have been using it quite often. To my surprise the cutter is still going like a champ so I just keep using it. At some point in the future I may upgrade to the Xikar but for now the $4 cutter is serving me well.

oh..and never a problem with unravelling.

I've used the Wolff with the plastic body and the Solingen blade for awhile. You see them on eBay for ~10 or so. Works great but the Xikar and the added weight behind the body is even better and just cuts the head with much more ease.

I've never had any issues with the cap with either and the added benefit is I tend to get almost zero pieces of loose tobacco with the V-cut.

So I've been eyeing the V-cutter from Xikar lately. I think the cut looks great but does the wrapper come unwrapped? Any thoughts?
Is there a specific type of cutter (V, punch, spike, guillotine) for certain vitolas? As a Newb, I'm just pleased when I haven't wrecked the stick after "cap surgery"! Which tools work best for different types of cigars? I have found that I am more skilled with scissors due to the sight line that I get at the cap, but I can see reasons to use a v-cutter if the stick is a large ring gauge, as it would seem to condense the surface area for smoking. Please fill me in.

I picked up the Xikar V Cut after one of the guys working at The Fed B&M here had me try a My Father Le Bijou box pressed with a V-Cut. I use the V Cut on my Lances, and Figurados, and sometimes the smaller ring gauge smokes. I second Ecks on the LP9 as I've found I get a better stay on the wrapper head with a V cut then with using my scissors.

I used to use a Colibri V-cutter way back when...the Mrs. got it engraved at the mall many years ago :lookaroun. It worked great until I lost it in the divorce. Excellent trade-off.

I relegated it to small ring sizes at the time. Then I started using it on churchills and discovered I had less unraveling issues. When Xikar came out with one, I grabbed it out of nostalgia but soon re-discovered it merit. Personal preference I guess on how you cut your cigar, but when you think about it...it's great to have another option & and a new cigar toy at the same time. This one is rock solid and puts in a nice deep cut in the cap no matter the ring size...no tearing at all. The draw has been perfect every time I've used the Xikar on any size stick.

Keep an eye out on Cigar Monster...they periodically offer them up at a great price, that's where I got mine.

Love mine. Great construction, good hand feel. I'd recommend getting one. There's one on the mash up today for a decent price.

I love a V cut since the first time I used it in 1999...that was with the boston V Cutter....they make a smaller version but it's still expensive but it works so good that it was well worth the cost becuz I still have and use it. I have the Xikar and Wolf which are good but the Boston V cutter is the best out there IMO. When using a V cut always moisten the tip so you don't end up cracking the head...( dry cuts tend to make the head unravel )

Just stop smoking the LPs and you'll be fine.

I have a wolf V cut and it works great.

Thank you for all the information. I've used a knife since I started smoking and never had any issues but I love the way those cuts look. And it looks like I'll be picking one up on my next order. Thanks Brothers!!
