Verdadero Organic
The Specs
Manufactured: Nicaragua
Length/Gauge: 5.0 x 50 Robusto
Wrapper/Filler: Connecticut wrapper with organic filler from Granada, Nicaragua
Price: $5-$6 for singles depending on vitola; less in 5 packs and boxes
Ive had this stick in my humidor for about a year now. I smoked one last winter and found it to be super, super mild. Im curious to see what a year aging has done to the smoke.
Appearance
Darker khaki colored Connecticut wrapper. No blemishes or overly large veins.
Grade: B
Construction
Foot seems well packed; no hard or soft spots I can detect. Nice looking double cap. Cut cleanly with a v-cutter. Draw is good, to just a hair snug; I dont anticipate any issues however.
Grade: B
Flavor
Pre-light aroma is rather pungent, similar to sauerkraut, but not unpleasant.
Cold draw was rather mild, light earthiness with a slight powered milk-chocolate flavor, very pleasant, but elusive. I keep trying to place the flavor, especially since I dont normally associate chocolate flavors with a Connecticut wrapper and was not expecting this, but I just cant put my finger on it.
Toasted and it light right up. Very, very mild with good smoke output. That very light chocolate flavor is back, and I think I have it figured out. You know that not-quite-there, not-quite-chocolate flavor of Yoo-hoo? Thats what I taste; its very subtle, but there. There is barely any finish to the cigar. Ash fell off after ½ inch and continues to fall off every ½ or so when I set it down in the ashtray. (I presume this is not long filler, I dont think Im that rough on my smokes.)
The light Yoo-hoo flavor is being replaced with stronger earthy notes about ½ way in; its still very, very mild with little to no finish. Stick ended similarly, very mild overall with some earthiness, and zero finish.
Grade:C-
Value
A decent, mild smoke, but since the price point is north of $3 even in boxes, I think you are paying more for the organic name than anything else.
Grade: F
Final Thoughts
This is a nice, single note working in the yard type cigar; I don't think age had any affect on the stick. I would probably suggest keeping some around to knock around with, or a good place to start if you are new to the hobby, but the cost keeps me a bit hesitant to give a full recommend to buy.
