Wanting some advice on a smoking room.

I am looking to convert my new basement into a smoking room/bar. I will have pictures later to help everyone see what I am working with. My plan so far is to add a damper for the AC unit to prevent the smoke from going elsewhere in the house. I will also have a blower that will move are from the room to the outside.

Things that I am considering thus far:

1. What type of air purifier should I use?
2. Do I need a purifier and a smoke eater or will the blower do?
3. How to decorate? So far I am looking for a nicer table to place my bands on.
4. Electronics; I am going to have a projection screen on the far wall with surrond sound.
5. Bar in the far back corner.

I would love to hear any ideas or thoughts. I want to make this a true man cave.

Try a good solid exhuast system with an external mounted fan. No noise and lots of air movement. This works in SoCal but maybe not elsewhere. Tried three different purifiers including some expensive ones. All sucked.

Gotta agree, I think the most important thing is air quality for the rest of the home. You'll want to concentrate hard on this one, the rest is a matter of what type of furniture, what color, etc..etc.. Good luck man, would love to see some pics!

There isn't a downstairs return so the room is already isolated somewhat. My dad is a AC guy so we are working on some ideas for the exhaust system as we speak.

That's a link I have saved for smoke eaters. I don't have any personal experience as to how well they work. The shop I work at uses ceiling fan filters and multiple exhaust outlets which seems to have a return. The other thing that seems to keep the place under control is an ozone generator.

I got to say that those purifans work. I've changed the filters a number of times and there's a ton of shit trapped in the filter media. Plus it also seems to help diffuse the smoke along the ceiling in order for it to be easily sucked through the exhaust system.

If you plan on a 100% air exchange with an exhaust fan you won't need a smoke eater just be sure to match the CFM of the exhaust fan with the volume of air being pumped into the room, a little higher in fact to ensure a good exchange. Too high the negative pressure will start pulling cool air from the other rooms off of that trunk. Too low and the positive pressure in the room will drastically reduce the exchange rate and raise the humidity level.

Speaking of humidity, you say you have no return in the basement which explains the de-humidifier in the pic. The AC unit is cooling the air in the basement but because the air in the room never actually gets back to the unit the moisture in it remains rather than condensing on the coil. The exhaust fan will definitely help with your humidity issue.

Hope this helps, I'm responsible for the maintenance of 16 buildings on a college campus and address issues like this regularly.

So what has been done? Added a ventilation system that removes smoke from the air at the same time shuts off the man return in the room. Got liquor. Got a Kegerator. That is really all you need right lol.

Unfortunately I can't offer much input on ventilation systems, air purifiers etc. But one thing I do know is that a projection screen in a smoking room/cigar lounge/man cave may be a bad idea depending on the efficiency and how many people you plan to have over for events. Just like insects flying in front of the projector at the drive in, I would imagine the same problem could be caused by an excess of smoke while enjoying tv or movies, just a thought.

As for decor, I'm not sure what your budget is like but have you given thought to wooden paneling to give it that cigar lounge look?

The other thing to take into consideration is the smoke depositing itself on your lens and bulb for the projector. This can cause the $$ bulbs to prematurely fail and you wouldn't want that.

With the ventilation system that I will be installing there will be little smoke visible in the air. I was orignally worried about staining the projector screen itself. I have found a paint on projector paint that works amazing. So anytime it becomes stained/needs a new coat I just roll it on.

Next step is some big lazy boy style leather chairs for a nice viewing experience.

darker colored walls, and you can get some good artwork at ross.. like wine and cigar paintings.
iv'e seen m.
wine racks and maybe even paint ur fridge black."not totaly nesecary".
but u got alot of potential down there. and take ur time. don have to buy it all in one day.
but i understand the "want to".. hey its ur new toy feeling.!!
