  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

What do designations such as H. Uppman and Montecristo mean?

This is another question that's been bugging me for awhile.

How exactly do different blenders/brands such as AJ Fernandez create an "H. Uppman" or "Montecristo"? (two I can name off the top of my head) I notice AJF has made both..... Yet other brands make cigars using the same name. I thought these were brands in their own right? Do these names symbolize a certain tobacco blend/recipe?

Thanks.

Those are formerly Cuban "brands" now completely separate and mostly owned by the big corps ie:general & altadis.
They've been losing market share to the boutique operations, so they hired aj to create new blends for their brands, to gain back marketshare and hopefully revitalize the brands.

So @Glassman is correct, as you probably know these companies originated in Cuba. Following the Cuban revolution a lot of the owners weren't too happy with the socialization of their companies (16 in all seized by Castro) and losing ownership so some of them moved. H. Upmann moved to the Canary Islands and then the DR to establish a new company, and were soon after bought up by the larger companies as stated previously. After some time they litigated for the rights of their names to be sold in the US market. And as @Glassman stated, since these larger ex-cuban companies have been getting out-competed in the marketplace by other companies, boutiques and the like, they "recruited" AJ to create blends for their companies to revitalize them and to garner a larger pull/draw (no pun intended) with the younger/newer smokers. They did a great job with the majority of the new blends with AJ in my opinion, especially the H. Upmann.

Speaking of AJF, that dude is on a tear recently for creating special blends and/or collaborations with what seems like every cigar brand in the game today. He's like the Samuel L. Jackson of the cigar world!

...except, to me, all of AJF's cigars are really good. He hasn't made a "Snake's on a Plane" cigar yet.

Haha I agree. All of his collaborations have been really good. The only one I don't like as much is the Black Monte. I enjoyed the White Monte a lot more. I also didn't like his New World (original) that much. But I loved the broadleaf and puro especial. I'm going to have to revisit the original cause everyone seems to love it.

Diesel rage... :yuck: But hell, they can't all be winners. He's created a stunning number of great blends.

I actually liked the Unholy Cocktail. I thought it was a great yard-gar with 6 months of rest on them.
Yeah, I think most of the diesels are supposed to be pretty good for what they are, I just didn't care for the "rage" variation. As far as that one, I would probably get some, I just choose not to buy things labeled "evil, wicked, unholy, etc" just doesn't sit well with me.

I really enjoy those too. I honestly liked most of the Diesels I've had. I also really love the Gispert Intenso. For a 7 dollar stick its one of the better one's I've had this year by AJ, aside from the T which I think is my favorite. ~Sidebar, anyone willing to trade some T's for some hit & runs? I have 4 I am looking to get rid of, they just dont fit my palate well. Or even anything else I'd be willing to trade for if anyone is interested.

This is something I kept wanting to ask but only thought about it at inopportune times. I keep seeing Monte by Montecristro AJF pop up everywhere and I bought a fiver of H. Upmann by AJF a while back because they seemed well liked. Glad its been clarified because it was a head-scratcher for me!

Trademarks determine what the item is called.
How would you decide the copyright problem of how to sell Cuban cigars in the US ?
