financial advice!! my 457 deferred comp is taking a beating!! lost >$9000 this last quarter.

looking at the spreadsheet is an instant headache. i don't know the difference between

HARTFORD CAP APPR HLS IA 30.00%
HARTFORD MIDCAP HLS FD IA 20.00%
AmFds EuroPactc Gr R4 30.00%
AmFds Gr Fd Am R4 20.00%

and

whatever else is offered.

i'm told to leave all alone, and it'll work itself out. i'm also told i should put $$ in 'safer' markets (whatever that means).

so, who here teaches econ 101?

Dam. I took the class but don't remember a thing.lol I've been told the idea to stay more aggressive because I'm still young and have time to make up any losses. I just stood in the safer markets for now because of the economy but ya I don't know much anyways.

That buy and hold strategy doesn't work anymore... It doesn't just work itself out anymore. You need a different strategy.

Yeah it sucks Jeff I lost 12% in 3Q 2011. In the 7 years I've been in mine it hasn't turned a % In fact 2Q last year I was finally in the black. Then I received my 2011 3Q with a 12% loss. Instantly, I was thinking here we go again. Haven't received 2011 4Q to see where I'm at but I know the market has been way up since then so well see. My BiL works for Oppenheimer in NYC (who I went to visit when we went to NY this year and was at the herf) just re did it last year after being in it for 6 years so we will see. I don't think the old hold and dont peak thing works anymore.

this is what i look like at 35. if you are looking to retire at 50 and you are 47 then you shouldn't be worried about that.... if i were you though i would work as long as you could, but you said you 47 and going to retire at 50 yours should be the opposite as mine. them money i get for free that is the matched money looks like this

Short Bonds/Stable/MMkt 1%
Interm./Long-Term Bonds 2%
Aggressive Bonds 4%
Large-Cap Stocks 7%
Small/Mid-Cap Stocks 6%
International Stocks 80%

There I really nothing you could have done to avoid your 3rd quarter losses unless you moved to cash. Don't beat yourself up over it.

Somebody mentioned buy and hold doesn't work anymore. Well that may be true to some extent but you would then have to manage the investments more actively yourself.

PM me if you would like.

As for the person with 80% international holdings, that is a very contrarian strategy. Good luck. Most fund of funds and hedge fund strategists are completely out of International.

I don't know squat either. My friends dad does this stuff so he gave my 5 funds with percentages to invest in and he said don't change until I'm at a age that I want to become more conservative. This year, I'm taking a beating, but everyone is. It will bounce back. Keep on buying since the prices are low.

Also, nice job reviving an almost 4 year old thread.
