  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Hey brothers, My issue is this. I have a full wine cooler, but my humidity if sitting at 70% or higher, temp is sitting around 65 ish. I have 1 lb. of 65% beads in the bottom. I have pulled all other beads and Bovedas.
My beads are bone dry and they don't seem to be absorbing excess humidity. I can't get my humidity to drop, I have left the door open for hours at a time to get the boxes to dry out slightly. But after I close the door again the humidity goes back up to 70% or higher. I need to get the humidity down ASAP.

Any suggestions on how to get the boxes to dry out just enough to drop the overall humidity back to the 62 to 65% humidity?

How about pulling all the beads and packs letting it settle to the desired RH and the reintroduce humidification? If it's full it might take a while for the sticks to regulate down.. I did this in my desktop when it spiked then added the boveda back and it's been fine ever since... Took a little bit.

Very good suggestion. Especially since the humidity is between 60-65% in our area this week.

They hgyro has been spot on for several years so not worried about that. I have pulled all the humidification from the wine cooler and it still reads 70 or over. So I have just the boxes in the cooler I don't have any shelves. So the boxes and cigars are holding 70% plus. So I pulled all the boxes and opened them up and they are sitting in the office for a few hours to see if airing them out will bring down the humidity. I wet the beads and are letting them stabilize in the wine cooler. I hope this might work,

Any further ideas?

Donk why wet beads if your humidity is too high? Ya lost me bro! If its right at 70. Open all the boxes for a few hours and replace back in the cooler for another day and recheck. Also most digital hygro batteries last only a couple years. Replace the battery and re calibrate. Low battery levels may be leading to a incorrect RH reading.

I have had the boxes out for several hours, and no humidification in wine cooler. I checked the hygros over the weekend, they can't be adjusted but they are only a point or so off. So the boxes have been sitting with the door open every evening for a couple hours. Still when I close it up for the night the next morning the humidity is back up to 70%. I'm getting pissed now. I have a full wine cooler of cigars that are way too humid.

Side question: what humidity range in the best for aging of CC's long term? 65% or 70% ?

I think most people favor a lower rh but it is a much debated issue. I like 63-65ish but that's me.

I'm thinking days with no humidification, not hours. I had to do it in my little half full desktop, and it took a while. Got it to where I wanted and threw a boveda in for better control. I'd imagine on a wineador scale it could take a while. I wouldn't worry though just take the humidification out, let it drop, it shouldn't just tank on you...add beads when you're where you want to be... Just my .02

I guess I just need more patients. I just don't want to wind up with any mold issues.
Only if your practice is not profitable! :) In all seriousness I'd just leave the humidification out and let the boxes come down slowly. I keep all my cigars at 65rh but that is just me.

I keep my wino between 65 and 70. In the summer when humidity spikes over 85 everywhere, it's harder to keep stable.

Last summer I injected dry air from the dehumidifier to bring my RH to 65. Did that a few times in a week before it stabilized.

But at 70 I wouldn't call it too humid, and there's no chance of mold.
