Wireless routers

Looking at the Netgear R7000 or Linksys EA7500, both are AC1900 class with MU-MIMO. just trying to get better range than we have now with an old D-Link N. I don't use the router functionality, just use it as an AP. Thoughts, opinions?

Iam partial to asus. But it seems like everybody uses the same chipsets (i.e. Ac1900)

The Asus in this class is also highly rated, but the box is oriented vertically like it would be wall mounted, which doesn't work for me. Just trying to get the best range and performance in the under $200 price range.

It's optional to put it upright it lays flat as well.

My last setup simply used two D-link WAPs. If your router only has one Ethernet port, Put your drop from your router into a switch. From your switch drive your WAPs.
My last place had an open basement (ceiling) so this was easy.

I don't see how, that would put the connections on the bottom. The jacks are on the back when it's upright.

I have a netgear r6400 and really like it. Strong signal throughout the house (townhouse) while the router itself is positioned in the basement.

However, if I going to pick up a new router, I would consider Ubiquiti Unifi Secure Gateway and Unifi AC-Pro if you are somewhat technical as the setup is supposedly not as straight forward commercial grade routers. They are enterprise grade equipment at a relatively similar price point (~$230 for both). Feature wise there would be a ton of things you don't use, but the range and signal strength are supposed to be great. And if you ever added an additional access point, they can hand off you connection to each other.
