  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Will be receiving the subject lighter today. Have been using a Ronson and a cheapie from my B&M.

Xikar makes a pretty firm emphasis on only using their Xikar PUROFINE butane as it is super refined. I do not have that available locally so would have to order on-line.

Are there any other butane brands that are sufficiently clean to use in the Xiker. (I can get Lucienne - quadruple refined locally)

I use Vector (x5 filtered if you believe the can). I bought 4 large cans on sale (I think @ Field Supply) and have never had an issue. It's probably a lifetime supply. +1 for buy on line.

there are several options out there for triple, quadruple, and quintuple refined fuels.. most can be purchased online reasonably cheap..

a lot of guys seem to prefer vector around here

Ive bought Visol a couple of times in the past.. it seemed to work well...

lotus is pretty popular as well...

Colibri fuel is triple refined...

Had a Vector lighter that quit while using Vector fuel. Put Xikar fuel and it worked......was the Xikar fuel the reason it started worked again? I don't know but all of my lighters are Xikar except for two, so I just go ahead and use their fuel. Haven't had any problems!

Vector is one of the best fuels out there...any fuel that is 5X refined should be what you're looking for. I know CI sells them at a good pricing esp. if you use their FREE S/H...great deal and the can is extra large.

Currently experiencing an issue now with this lighter. I am using Colibri fuel and it takes me 3-4 times each time to light it. Not sure if it's a fuel issue or lighter issue but I will be trying a different fuel once it runs out to see if that fixes the issue. Otherwise, it's back to Xikar to get fixed.

I'm a huge Vector fuel guy. I've got about 35 butane lighters (some around 10 years old) and every single one of em work without any firing or sputtering issues. Below is a post I made elsewhere back in January comparing Xikar and Vector fuel.

Hello Folks,
I'm a lighter nut so I have a ton of lighters and I have used/trusted vector fuel for many years but when I ran out about 6 months ago I tried the xikar fuel because it was cheaper and based on the reviews I saw, it was of equivalent quality to the vector. I've been using the xikar for the past 6 months and have noticed a decline in the performance of many of my lighters. I probably still have a half a can of xikar left but I ordered more vector as I supected the xikar wasn't getting the job done.

I emptied out the xikar fuel from some of my lighters and replaced it with vector fuel and sure enough, all of the flames returned to their previous higher heights and powerful flames.

So I now know that vector is the fuel for me and will stick with that going forward. In the pics below, you will see the lighters with both fuels (xikar fueled lighter is always in 1st of two pics with the same lighter) all set at the same high setting with noticeably higher/stonger flames with lighters filled with vector fuel. Hopefully this post will help some when deciding what fuel to buy.

Because of reading this post a long time ago I switched to Vector and it got lighters working that were broken from the xikar. Only fuel I'll put in my Ronson.

Finally ordered a can of vector. Didn't know any better when I bought my first torch last year and have been using cheap Ronson fluid. Have a new Xikar torch for a couple months now and starting to get finicky and noticed even after refilling that I have to have the flame turned all the way up. Hope the vector cleans it out and gets it working 100% again.

Two things could be happening. The Spark wire has moved out of place or the compressed air that they put in with the butane has gotten into your lighter. I would try purging it all out completely then ensuring you do not shake the can and try again.

Good point here....the spark wire 'can' be a problem but usually isn't an issue unless it was problematic from day one. If you are getting a spark then the wire is in the right position and the next thing to check is air in the chamber as this is the biggest problem concerning lighters. Refills are the chief problem for having air in the chamber because during a refill one can have the nozzle at an odd angle and then you are putting a mixture of air and butane in...this is what causes the sputtering and flame outs in a lighter. The best thing one can do for their lighter is to purge the entire contents of the lighter when you refill...a lot of people will just add more fuel instead of doing a purge and then they get more problems. It usually takes a couple of purges to get everything out of the lighter...keep purging until there is no more hissing sound. Ensure that you recharge where the nozzle isn't bent or you'll hear the hissing sound...that means your just putting air right back into the chamber.
