  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I know there's a few guys here who really don't like the Xikar lighters... With all due respect, please don't post here if that's you. I know it's an open forum, and whatnot, but I'm looking for the opinions of people who enjoy their Xikars... Sorry if that sounds rude, but I'm sold on the brand and just need to pick a model.

That being said, I'm trying to decide between an Executive, Axia and Trezo (single, double and triple jet, respectively) for my new lighter... Those of you with those model(s) (or others) please post what you think of them! I'm currently leaning towards the Axia, on aesthetics, and the fact that it's the middle-of-the-road amongst the three.

Opinions? Reviews?

Thanks!
Jeremy

Without knowing anything about them. I bought this Xikar single torch plunger lighter at a local B&m a few weeks ago. Price was the main factor in my decision.

Likes: It's light and fairly small. Has a fuel level window. Lights first time 99% of the time. Great for toasting and lighting small to medium ring gauge cigars. Good for lighting in windy conditions.

Dislikes: In sunlight I can't see the flame a lot of the time. For larger ring sticks I have a hard time getting a consistent light but I'm so new at this I may just not know a good technique. It's red. (only color they had at the time)

I think to some degree you should figure out how many flames you want...

I for one would prefer a single over a triple given that I mainly prefer smaller RGs.

Self-opening top, trigger pulls away from double torch, and comes with a lifetime guarantee!

How can you go wrong?

I have this exact same one and love it. what I love most. I bought it 2 years ago online from Cbid. Well, the top no longer flipped up. Took it to my local BM the other night, they changed it out for a sparkly brand new one. Gotta love that. It is my favorite lighter out of the 10 or so I have.

I think the amount of flames I want is a double-jet, but I figured I'd get reviews if I could... I'm going to try and use an Executive at my local B&M to get a feel for xikar's jet strenght and go from there... Probably going to go with the Axia in the end

My only complaint about my executive is the fact that it doesn't have a fuel window. The other two you mentioned are fairly similar, just whether you want a double or triple flame

I have an EX because I personally prefer soft flame lighters. It's served me well for around 3 years now. Had one problem with it a few months ago and sent it in to Xikar. Within 2 weeks they sent me a brand new lighter. Whichever one you choose you can't go wrong with Xikar support and lifetime warranty. Plus Pepin uses an EX lighter.

I know you only wanted positive comments, but that does not lead to an informed decision. And since you are choosing the exact lighter that turned me off of XiKar, I am going to against your wishes.

YThe Executive has an abnormally small fuel tank, no fuel window, not that you'll need it, because it's good for maybe 3 cigars. Mine stopped lighting after 2 weeks of cigars. Used the waranntee 3 times and got sick of sending it back. Finally I told them to send me a cutter instead of a lighter, and they obliged. Only good this I have to say about Xikar lighters is that you get a new one every 2 months as long as you have the patience to wait for them to send it back. If you call they will even send you a prepaid USPS label to pay for shipping. But why do all that for a crappy lighter.

I also have a XiKar Pipelie soft flame lighter that does not work well either, and the side of my cutter keeps falling off.

My Palio and Ronson have been solid as a rock since day 1. For what it's worth.

The Axia is a nice choice of style, double flame, heft, etc. You might also want to look into the Element. It also has a double flame lighter with a built in punch on the bottom. A nice single flame is the new Versa with two punch cutters built in on the side. Although it is a single flame, it is fatter than most and still lights bigger cigars well. Good luck on your choice.

I was gifted a XiKar Incline (single flame) last Christmas and have been using it problem free since. I suaully have terrible luck with lighters that cost more than $4 (the Blazers being the lone exception), but I am satisified with the Incline so far.

I love my Ronson JetLite but I'm seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on this new NXT Xikar lighter....

I have that. It's fairly alright. Already had to send one back-it stopped clicking to spark and ignite. The slots on the side of the lighter let dirt in to the jet, and mine clogged up and had to be blown clear several times. All within 3 months.

Do you keep it in it's leather case? Haven't that happen to the one I use.

I got some Xikar double flame jobby because it matched my cutter. Yes, I'm serious. But I love it. Works like a champ. Good on fuel and have used it about a year with no problems other than the blue color starting to chip off the plastic. Sometimes I wish I could switch from double to single flame for touch ups though.

Well guys, There was an event at my local tobacconist today (for Oliva, my favorite cigar maker, to be honest, I always have at least 5 Serie "G"s in the humi) and the guys had happened to have gotten their shipment of Xikar toys the previous day. They let me play with (and try out) an Executive and an Axia, along with an EX. Here's my brief review (more like a quick opinion)

Executive - The single flame would be enough if it had a bigger tank. While I don't "slow toast" I do like to do a thorough, longer than necessary, toast. Not slow, but by no means fast. I liked the single flame, but if I buy one, it'll be the NXT/Nautilus, or a different lighter/maker entirely. It didn't always light on the first click either (unless you depressed slowly letting it breathe enough butane). Which isn't unexpected considering the very low price point (and it's still a helluva lighter at that point, but more for the few-sticks-a-month guys, not me).

EX - Nice. Very nice. But if I want a soft flame, I have a ton of matches (and I actually like to, when I'm indoors, Toast by torch, then light by match.) I'm not paying that much for a soft flame... That's just me though.

Trezo - Nice. Very, very very nice. I like it a lot. However, it's expensive, 3 jets is overkill for me, and I liked the Axia more... Between how fast the 3 jets would eat butane, and how fast they could kill a cigar I passed on it... I do, still, really want one though :)

Axia - Peeeeeeeerfect :D Ergonomic, functional, just the right amount of flame. Absolutely perfect. A bit pricey, but so worth it (and it's lifetime guarentee. The guys in the store told me, in no uncertain terms, if I ever had ANY problems, even ones that I don't even mind, bring it back to them, they'll swap it on the spot, no questions.) I love xikar warranties. The jets, when dialed a tad low, have the perfect combination of strength, and mellow. Toast without burn, quick light without rush. It may not be for everyone, but it's exactly, perfectly, what I wanted. I'm in love, guys.

I also got seven or eight wonderful cigars today. I love Olivas.

What a great day.

Cheers,
Jeremy
