Yet another bead question.

The concensus is to wet the beads to about 70-80% saturation. I understand the reasons behind this, but does it matter how you go about doing this? In other words, can I take a pound of beads, physically separate out 20% of them to be left completely dry and thouroughly wet (not in excess, of course) the remainder?
