  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Almost everywhere you'll read that traditional Zippo lighters should not be used to light cigars. I'm wondering, however, if anyone has used them and found that they do not effect the flavor of the cigar.

I am not nearly as advanced of a smoker as many on this board, but using a standard Bic lighter completely ruins the taste for me. To me, it tastes like having heavy tar buildup and fumes mixed together. I haven't tried with a Zippo, but I would imagine it's very similar.

They do have those Butane Flame inserts for Zippos though and they're only like $11. I'd like to try one of those once I find a nice Zippo

I have one of those inserts for my Zippo and I love it. LOVE IT. Zippo does make torches now but they're $$$. Cheaper to be a cheap Zippo case you like then add the insert.

I think the newer version of the zippo fuel has less odor than the older version. I personally havent tried the new fuel. I think the main thing is you let some of the smell burn off for a few seconds before lighting your cigar. Lots of pipe smokers use zippos.

Funny, I've never considered using a zippo just based on the information found here. I haven't been misled yet.

Regarding Bic lighters, I'll pic them up when travelling when I can't bring a torch and never had an issue. I though they were butane.

I believe they do use Butane fuel, but my understanding is they burn much cooler. When a torch lighter is lit, its high heat burns off all the smelly fuel. I have no clue how the two lighters are capable of different ouput temperatures though

I was thinking the same thing some of the posters said.

First, i was wondering if letting the flame burn a bit would burn off the smell.

Second, I have read that they are making a less "smelly" fuel now.

Third, I have found that different types of flame really effects the taste of my cigars. For example, a cigar lit with a torch really tastes different than one lit with a match and so on.

I have used and both a bic and zippo's, either have had a major affect on taste to me. Never had an issue with the smell of fuel or adverse changes in taste.

Zippos do not use butane, they use a more petroleum like fuel which I believe is paraffin based.

Butane is practically odourless and burns much hotter, thus being very beneficial for cigar lighting

I sometimes soak my cigars in lighter fluid to get a real nice even burn throughout the cigar. When using this method it burns from all sides at once and tastes like shit but smoke time is cut down dramatically.

lol - my fiance is the medical field and DOES NOT recommend this method. However, the medical field also does not recommend smoking a cigar, so what do they know.

I think I may have found a better method. Place either the heads of matches or the whole match throughout the inside of the cigar. As the cigar burns the matches will keep igniting and keep the cigar lit. Putting the matches inside the cigars may be tricking so you can cut the cigar open with an Xacto blade, put the matches inside and reseal the cigar with duct tape. Of course, the duct tape may not burn well so you may have to come up with something to keep it burning.

I also have the zippo incert. It's about $12.00 in connecticut it is the best thing on the market, it works so well that zippo tried to sue them and lost the suit. If you own a zippo and want to use it for cigars it's the way to go. I have owned allot of expensive torch lighters in my time and none of them have worked as good as this cheep thing, had mine forover two year and still working great.

I've heard. Good and bad on zippo for. Lighting. In my experience, it changes the flavor for a short time then it's back to normal... Smoke pipe and cigars
