  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

    Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Like many, I love my Zippos. I have a few stowed away in my attic that I used to use all the time back when I smoked cigarettes (many, many moons ago) but never used it on my cigars as it was a definitive "no-no". However, I see now there are options such as inserts and Zippo's low-odor fluid.

While I like the idea of an insert, I'd rather stick to a traditional set up if possible. But to be honest, I'm a little skittish about trying it, lol. Anyone have experience with their newer fluid? Also, should I use my old Zippos (haven't touched them in probably 18 years), or start with a fresh one? Just wondering if the old ones would have naphtha residue in them?

ZippoGeek approves of this post! (y)(y) I'm more a Zippo collector than a user, especially when it comes to lighting cigars. I just don't like the odor under my nose, even with their "low-odor" fluid. The only Zippo I've never tried is the butane Blu; just ordered one yesterday, so I'll let you know how I like it for my 'gars. :)

Definitely let me know what you think of the Blu! I may try some of the low-odor fluid on one of my lesser sticks and see how it performs.

try lighting cigarillos - light two taste the potential difference. Torch lighters for me char the foot too fast, and zippo with Ronson fluide taste like crap.
I prefer wood. But try it and see how it does for you.

I use a Zippo pipe lighter. The low odor fuel is less wind-proof. I've never noticed a Zippo impacting the flavor, but I probably don't have the best taste.
I'd try the Zippo on a cheap cigar first.
I've used Zippos many times to light my cigars in the past, but about ten years ago I let myself be talked into butane. I wonder if we don't sometimes get carried away with purity;
first lighting a cedar spill, then hoping it doesn't go out before you get your stick toasted and lit?

I've been using a Zippo with the Zippo low odor fuel for the past week after my torch took a dump. I'm pleased to find that you cannot taste the fluid at all. Lit a few with the Ronson fluid before, and it'll ruin the cigar.
Only problem is it's not very windproof, and needs to be filled frequently. That being said, I wouldn't hesitate to use this setup indefinately if I didn't live in such a windy place.
Just ordered the Thunderbird insert with the dual torches.

I found the Zippo brand fuel at Wal-Mart in the camping section of all places.

I just got a bottle of this new Zippo fuel. Smells as bad to me as the Ronson version.

I have two Zippos, on old one from 1981 and a new Armor version. I bought two Vector inserts, the flint soft flame and the torch version. Both fit fine into the old Zippo but both are terribly loose in the new Armor version. I wrapped some tape around the torch insert and now it fits fine. Love the traditional Zippo but for cigars, I prefer the butane inserts, especially the flint/soft flame version.

The new fluid seems to burn more completely, or at least it seems to. I bought a thunderbird insert double torch for one of my zippos. It's my EDC lighter now
