  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Not the taste I was expecting

I am fairly new to the cigar world and I just recieved a briar pipe for christmas. I have some Dunhill nightcap and morning blend and Sir Walter Raleigh mild aromatic and they all taste, well, campfire-ish. The smoke is not nearly as smooth and feels hotter. :help:

They taste nothing like what I'm used to smelling as pipe tobacco and taste absolutely nothing like most cigars I enjoy. No warm nutty/cocoa flavors, more like burning cedar. Am I smoking the wrong blends or is pipe tobacco just not for me?

I never recomend a newb to start with an English blend. I would start with something like Peterson's luxury. Pipe smoking is an art form and takes time to master.
Just this morning I smoked 4 noggins three blind moose, I nice aromatic with a wonderful butterscoth note in the back. I smoke pipes in the AM and cigars at night.

Agreed about English blends for newbies.

Also, smoking a pipe is much more of an art than cigars IMHO. Keeping it lit but not puffing so often you burn the tobacco (and your mouth) is tough to get the hang of.

I totally agree with my brother's comments and suggestions to you my friend. Unitl you develop a nice "cake" in the bowl probably everything is gonna smoke hot. Always smoke a "full bowl" so that you develop a good cake in the bowl. If you puff too often you are gonna smoke "heat!"

I smoke a pipe in the Winter time, can't do it when it's hot and humid outside. Pipe smoking to me is like drinking coffee....cigars are like regular (high test) and pipe smoking is like drinking de-caf (just not the same "kick" for me!) Pipe smoking also takes patience because you are always fiddling around with it in my opinion.

I was just sitting at home thinking about your post.
If Aromatic are not your thing, try Peter Stokkebye Bulk Luxury Twist Flake
Straight Virginia tobacco, lots of taste with NO smokey campfire. Cheap as hell to boot.

I agree try and english blend. Peter Stokkebye's English Luxury is my normal bulk english. Other are Conrnell & Dehil's Yale Mixture, Habanna Daydreams (it contains cigar leaf), Old Collage. If there is a Tinder Box near your there Sherlocks Choice is not a bad bulk blend either.

I think it was the Lat smokiness that was turning him off, he should stay away from English blends. Stick with Aromatics or Virginia's

I would like to add one more point to Jim's post.
4) Don't give up - Pipe smoking is an art and takes months to get to a non-annoying level and years to master. You can't compair pipe smoking to cigar smoking two different animals. Also wifes love the smell of aromatic in the house - Big plus. My wife request certain tobaccos because she loves the smell -McClellands Holiday Spirit 2011 is one of them. Leaves the room smelling of Honey, Pecans & Rum.

I'd have one thing to add ...

The lat from Nightcap (although light, it is there) may be ghosting the pipe, which would be the reason the SWR is also smoky. I’d also second the other brothers on sticking with aromatics and VA’s. One of my favorite bulk blends is Lane’s BLWB, mild yet flavorful .... great all day smoke!!

I got Dunhill 965 it is loaded with that campfire smell, but to me is kinda nutty earthy taste. I compare all the other pipe tobaccos to it.

When I first started smoking a pipe I about burned a hole through my bowl. The goal with pipe smoking is almost to smoke it as cool and slow as possible to get the flavor from the tobacco. Hang in there buddy, with a little time pipe smoking is very rewarding.

Great post here. I just started smoking a pipe again and am having a very hard time at keeping the tobacco fired. I know I'm not supposed to puff away at it but somehow I've forgotten the art of keeping it lit. I been putting fire to it after a few minutes of smoking so I know I'm not doing something right....what is it?

I suspect your not packing it properly. I recommend to everyone who asks ( or doesn't ask) to look up the "frank method" of pipe packing on Youtube. It's worked great for me and made pipe smoking much more enjoyable as I am no longer relighting constantly.
