I've taken a few hits and it is simply KILLING me. It tastes real bad. Like I would imagine my Vector butane must taste... Is scotch an acquired taste? I just can't believe I hate it this much. :frown:

Hate it. I know many others here love it and good on them. Diet Dr. Pepper or iced tea for me thanks. Did I mention that I hate it?

Don't think I'm trying to be an ass with this question, but do you drink other hard liquors straight? If you're a fan of bourbon or other whiskeys but hate Scotch, I'd be a little surprised. But if you're not used to whiskey, yeah, it can definitely be an acquired taste.

You're right on. I don't drink others straight, so makes sense that I'm having a tough time here. I just had to try it. I had the impression that it was sort of magic elixir :) oh well, I'll finish this glass and just stash the rest of the bottle. Someone will drink it eventually

I was a beer drinker, and went to scotch. At first I had the same reaction. But it is an acquired taste. Try a Glenlivit 12, I found it is a little less harsh.

But now I enjoy a glass on the rocks with a good cigar.

It is one of those, hate it or love it type of drinks.

I'm starting to like it a little more, actually. I was repulsed at first, but it's not as bad right now. I got a little buzz going, so maybe that's the trick, eh? :). I'm smoking a DC Maximus robusto, btw. It seemed to me that the dark wrapper and strength would work with scotch..

In that case, you might start off with a nice, smooth bourbon like Maker's before jumping into single malt scotch. (Actually, I think bourbon is more a magic elixir than scotch anyway! :peace:) You can move from the easier-drinking stuff to more complex libations when and if you feel like it from there.

I'll try Maker's next. Costco has Maker's 46. Is that even smoother than regular Maker's? It costs more, that's for sure.

I was the same way first time I had scotch. Went to mixing bourbon, then bourbon neat and some whiskey then tried scotch again. Much better. Now I like my scotch neat and I'm a happy camper lol.

I guess I'm unique, but I started drinking scotch around 19, and in the last year or so have really gotten into scotches and bourbons. For me it wasn't an acquired taste. I enjoyed them from day one. Never used a splash of water, never put ice cubes in it. I only ever drank my alcohol neat. That's how I still do it. I liked scotch, bourbon and other whiskies from the very start and never wanted to let another substance dilute my enjoyment, especially not something as commonplace as water.

Guess I'm the oddball here.

I would even say start with drinking a nice rum straight like Zaya or Ron Zacapa. That will get you started down the right path. Otherwise NUTUP or Shutup!!!!! :sarcastic

I drink everything straight and still cant stand the taste of scotch. From low end to high end it all tastes horrible to me.

Never acquired a taste for it myself, from premium to budget, it all tastes like paint thinner to me. I drink tequila, rum and Jameson neat...but I just can't like the scotch.

Funny, I just bought a bottle of macallan 12 sherry cask last week and worked through the bottle in 5 days.

How are you drinking it? I find that for it to really "open" up, get "sweet" and to the point I enjoy is to pour in a little filtered water. The other option which I prefer is to drop in 1 or 2 ice cubes. As you drink and the ice melts there will be a certain point when the ratio of melted water to booze will be perfect and it will be nirvana.

It could also be a bit of a aquired taste.

Try it with a couple ice cubes if you haven't.

Stick with the regular Makers to start. It's more approachable. The 46 is more complex, but from what I've gathered from your previous posts I think you'd like the original better.
