Q: Last 2 Cigars That Surprised You - Good and Bad

Good: Eddie Ortega Serie D #8 Maduro - really enjoyed this stick, I expected it to be good, but for me it was exceptional. Smoke it last month during the Chattanooga Tweet-up, it was rich, smooth, creamy with great balance, yet it had enough body to keep my attention. Eddie has done a great job on these imo.

Bad: I can't comment publicly on the bad because imo it would be rude for me to do so, but most of you are at liberty to do so as consumers.

Good: Viaje Late Harvest 2012 - So smooth and creamy it was like a milkshake. I know that sounds weird but, I felt that way lol. It even had a little pepper kick in the last 1/3.

Bad: Cohiba Red Dot Robusto - I expected this to be great and it was very very bland. I put it out halfway though.

Good: Tat Anarchy (not what I expected at all in terms of flavors)

Good: San Cristobal Clasico - It helped going into it that I didn't have much in the way of expectations. That said, it had been months since a cigar surprised me like this one. It hit all the right notes for me.
Bad: Padilla Miami (new blend) - I had one in the lancero format that I smoked right away when I got them. Didn't like it at all but my hope is that they'll just need a little down time and possibly some dry boxing.

Steve, a question for you...
Have you ever been working on a blend, and have the initial batch or a certain tweak surprise you in an unexpected manner? Obviously you may not be able to talk about specific blends and such.

surprise and unexpected manner might be redundant in the same sentence, you know what I mean.

Good: Rodrigo Cigars and Quesada Espana

Bad: AB Prensado---hope that it was just too young but this sucker was all pepper and little or not spice or coffee/espresso notes and cedar as I read a lot of reviews. The pepper was so intense that the cigar just didn't come alive at all...it was like somebody opened the top of a pepper bottle and emptied it. I bought 2 five packs and will let the next one rest for a month or so...hope it settles down.

Good: Room 101 OSOK....gifted one by a BOIL in Florida, I thought the packaging was cool but wasn't expecting to like the cigar as much as I did.

Honorable mention to My Uzi Weighs a Ton. Simply bought one to "pay my keep" for smoking my own at a B&M, smoked it and thought it wasn't bad, though I am not a big fan of the jawbreakers in general.

Bad: Tatuaje Lil Monsters.....all 5 of them, but especially the Boris, Frank and Face.

Good: surrogates skull breaker. For me, they were great off the truck, and they're still my go to...
Honerable mention goes to the Room 101 Namakubi Roxxo. When I got them back in March (IIRC), they had a perfumey, floral quality to them that I didn't enjoy much. Smoked one this past weekend, and it blew me away.

Bad: Tatuaje mini mum. Just didn't live up to the hype for me. I was excited for this years Halloween release, but after that, I think I'll spend my money on something else.

The surprises:

Good: Viaje Late Harvest 648 (2012). Just a great morning cigar for me with an a-typical Viaje profile. I've smoked a few more since, and it's definitely a winner!

Bad: The 2003 Sancho Panza cg I'm smoking right now. Not really "bad," just kinda boring (guess the flavor profile is just too mild for me).

Good: Nestor Miranda SS Box-pressed torpedo; local B&M exclusive. Not a huge fan when I picked up a box for a great price in January, had one yesterday morning and it was crazy good; one of the few conn wrapped cigars with enough spice to keep me interested.

Bad: Room 101 Daruma Papi Chulo; unbalanced and harsh not my cup of tea at all.

Funny, of the 5, the Mum was the one I liked best (or should I say "hated the least".)

Good: Tat Cojonu '12 Sumatra: My favorite Tat Cojonu. A little sweetness, nuts, and oh so smooth. A snorker!

Bad: Acquitaine Cranium. Powerful beyond enjoyment and zero complexity.

Good: the new ROMEO. Smoked a few and really like them.

Bad: Room 101 OSOK. Packaging I thought was cool. I heard a lot of good things about this stick, butI thought it was horrid. Didn't get halfway through it and I tossed it. I only had one, so it could of just been a bad stick, but who knows.

Good: Quesada Jalapa.
Bad: Tatuaje Little Drac.

Good: La Herencia Cubana Core - Picked it up on a trade and didn't know what to expect. Exceptional burn and flavor profile.

Bad: Liga Privada T52 Toro - It had a good draw after I cut it and it put out plenty of smoke (externally) but I couldn't get much smoke on the draw. I also had trouble keeping it lit which led me to double draw and take less time between puffs (in an attempt to keep it lit). Finally I didn't get the expected Nica flavor profile, probably because I smoked it too fast . My guess is that it was probably just over-humidified. I picked it up on a recent purchase and probably should have rested it longer. No worries Steve, I'll be smoking more!

As an aside, I was also not happy with the way the band came off. I wanted to save it for a Humi that I am decorating but because the paper is so thin and has no lamination it did not come apart cleanly when I peeled it off. :frownno:

Bad: just had a My Father jaimie garcia reserva especial tonight that was really disappointing... I had high expectations and have really enjoyed everything else in the my father line... This one just didn't work for me at all..

Good: was very pleasantly surprised with a nub 460 Maduro yesterday... I expected it to be good... But I found it to be exceptionally nice when paired with the pumpkin wheat beer I was drinking... So nice that I plan on orderingxa box later this week..

Good: Illusione Holy Lancero, Maduro (I have found some of the other Illusione So~So, and I really enjoyed this one)
Bad: Alec Bradley Prensado Torpedo (did not enjoy it at all).

Bad: Tat Wolfman. While better then last year... Still muddled flavors and very little complexity.
Outstanding: smoking a Jul 09 CoRo right now. From the very first draw, terrific sweet ambient aroma, complex sweet, rich flavors. VERY clean long finish. Notes of slight hay, rich espresso coffee, cedar and thru the nose so delicate. No harsness but pure delicate, flavors. I COULD SMOKE THIS CIGAR EVERY DAY AND BE CONTENT!!!
