  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Well hello, gentlemen. I'm hoping some of you can help me out here as I'm sure some of you have been in the same boat.

The ol' ball and chain will not allow me to put a cigar lounge anywhere in the house as she feels I won't be able to contain the smell of smoke. I'm going to resort to putting a shed in my backyard. According to code, it can't be bigger than 140 square feet. It will be either an 8x12', 10x12', or 10x14'. I'm undecided.

The shed will likely be about 40-50 feet away from the house. My question to you guys is: have any of you done this before and ran power to your shed? If so, how much did it cost to have it done by a professional?

I'll need enough power for a light and a couple of receptacles that can handle a miniature fridge, air conditioner (summer), Eden Pure Heater (winter), 40" TV, and a Blu-ray player. And perhaps also able to handle some additional things like a laptop, cell phone charger, etc...

I just did exactly this (or, more correctly I had one built to spec) so can likely offer some advice as you need. Mine is 10' x 16' and had enough room for a pinball machine, arcade machine, dartboard, full size fridge, dual recliner (sort of like a loveseat with a center console for remotes/cupholders) tv stand, 42" lcd, ps3 and laptop. It's my little slice of heaven and worth every single penny I spent to have it built. One of these days I'll try and get some pics going. Been too lazy thus far lol

As far as your question regarding the electrical, I'm going to ballpark it and say it cost me about $1500 total, including running power from the house and wiring up the whole shed including vent fan. Don't have an exact figure since we lumped it in with some other work at the same time but that would be close anyway.

Will try and get some taken - it's a bit too small for my blackberry to take a decent wide shot so I'll have to bust out the actual camera. If you have any other questions though, throw me a pm anytime.

I will be eventually doing this, but putting some of my saws and tools out there and such. I would LOVE to see pictures of this. Take your time tho. Perhaps when I decided to do this down the road, I will get a hold of you with some questions. One quick one, what did you use for heat? And did you leave it on the whole time, to accomodate your tv and such?

I have a gas heater on the wall with a thermostat. I usually leave it set around 50-55f then just flip it to 70 when I'm in there. Because the space is so (relatively) small it heats up super fast and stays toasty even when I crack the window to allow for some fresh air while I'm running the vent fan. We insulated the crap out of it so the heater hardly ever needs to run when I'm not in there.

If there's one general piece of advice I can give, don't cheap out on 'equipment' if you decide to do something like this. For stuff like the heater and vent fan I went with the next size bigger than what I needed, because the cost was just marginally higher.

Yeah it would be nice ... jerkface Brent. I have my Mother moving out finally from the room in the basement and have been waiting for the day I could turn it into a mancave as it is pretty decent size. I got "the look" when I told the wife what I wanted to do with this new found gem. "There is no way you are tuning that into a room for your stupid cigars"....well that seems to be leaving me with a shed/workshop in the backyard like what you guys are talking about.
I have been contemplating building sizes too and think it would be as good of an idea as you all make it sound

Same project planned this summer. Neighbor that is in skilled trades offered to assist. Adding a 3gallon pot still into the mix (for water purification of course).
