My yard gar criteria is:
large ring gauge (so it rarely goes out)
Bold flavors
Not expensive
Or something I have low expectations for

My go to workhorses are the MUWAT in any of the larger sizes and LAT 56s.

If I'm smoking a cigar, I'm smoking a cigar. I can't really enjoy it while mowing or working. If I'm doing something like fishing or grilling, not really work, I'll grab something like a la ricky or a V or a EPC core line. Yard 'gars aren't much for me.

For me...

I'm out in the yard and smoking a cigar!

Any cigar will do. Mood and time available play heavily into my selection. I typically try not to choose one of my better or more expensive sticks, but I have on occasion smoked a good one. I don't want to have to put a lot of thought into my yard gar. I don't have time to be touching up the burn line or worry about it kicking my butt if I have to hold it in my mouth for a couple or few minutes.

Haven't had to do yard work in a while. Homeowners fee sucks, but they mow for it. If I had a riding mower, I would smoke whatever, as long as it wouldn't need too many touch ups. Push, something cheap.

Fuente Curlyheads are often my go to for yardwork and dog walks. Cheap, flavorful, mild, excellent burn & come in 40ct boxes. I'm not ever reaching for a stick over 5 bucks for chores.

Actually had my first "yard gar" yesterday while putting down bark... Was a 99 RyJ Exhibicion #4. I dont smoke while working for same reason as Ciggy, i dont like keeping gars in my mouth for long. The cigar made work more enjoyable, but took longer. LOL

I wish I could help you out on this but I cannot hold a cigar and do work at the same time. I hate it when I hold a cigar in my mouth and the smoke goes up my nose. To be honest I only smoke when I know I can relax and enjoy it so I don't stock up on much in the way of yard gars. If I'm fishing or had enough booze in me then I'll be sure to grab something that has been damaged in some way so I could care less if it gets ruined along the way.
Pretty much this.
I keep some more budget friendly smokes on deck for doing homework outside and such, but I'm still able to rest them in my ashtray.

For sure. I smoke when I mow the lawn, and my wife laughs because I push the self-propelled lawn mower with one hand, and smoke with the other. Takes three times as long, but is way more enjoyable!

I smoke something I have low expectations for, and is likely to be bold yet smooth. Peppery stuff is too harsh when you have to hold the thing in your mouth and get it in your nostrils and whatnot.

bold flavors, excellent durable construction, and nothing you cannot enjoy; while thoroughly outclassed on this one, i can see ara's point. o)

for me.. .a yard gar is an accessory to an event... while a "premium" is an event in and of itself....

Im not going to intentionally smoke something I dont like..

but at the same time, there are a lot of things I enjoy doing that take my focus... that I would like to enjoy a cigar while doing as well..

I dont want to burn an some HTF that I waited a year to get my hands on.. or a $20 super premium that Ive only got a couple of... while I am spending a couple of hours at the grill on the 4th of July.. or out walking the dog... or hanging out with the kids by the campfire at the cabin telling ghost stories.. etc..

but those might be perfect occasions to supplement an already enjoyable experience with a 5 Vegas Classic... or a Nica Libre.. or a PDR Oscuro.. etc... something I enjoy.. but havent spent a lot of money on, dont care if gets set down for 5 minutes while I do something else.. something that I have an abundance of.. can easily obtain again... etc..etc..

If I am specifically sitting down with the intent of slowing life down for an hour or two.. hanging out by myself or a couple of friends.. etc.. and have the time and ability to actually focus on the stick a little bit... those are the times I reach for a non yard gar (maybe 50% of my smoking experiences)....

I get what you're saying. I wouldn't burn a HTF or a $20 super premium (cause I don't have any of them anyway) either.

Agree with ara and bob...but like ciggy I can't mow my lawn or do lawn work while smoking. If I am running errands or cleaning out the garage I might have a cigar. But like ara I try to find cigars I like and try to buy as cheap and as many as I can. Call them daily smokes or yard gars they are same IMO. I do not venture out a lot of what I love. My father Lb line, mcw, loved Elo for a cheap great stick, and plenty of very good cc for under the 6-7 range.

Like most brothers, my criteria for a yard gar is :

Low price
Tastey
Dependable
A cigar that won't bum me out if damaged in the process or not all that good (throw away - able)

For me, a great one for this is La Perla Habana Morado.

For me a yard Gar is cheap. I'll buy a bundle of 25 for $25-30 and keep those for the yard this way if I do drop it or break it or forget about it I am not worried about it. Although I do like the idea of a full flavor cigar to keep your senses going

I haven't found a yard gar for myself yet. I am like some in here where I am not sure I can multi task to much. I have thought about giving Blue Ribbons a shot.

Anything I want to smoke outside, doesn't matter if it's a custom roll or a freshie, I really try not to buy just "cheap sticks" there's no enjoyment in that for me, I buy what I enjoy, so it's all fair game.
