  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I recently started smoking a pipe (about 6 months or so) and started out with two; a briar and a country gentleman cob. I really like the cob as a take anything pipe but I love my briar. Anyway, I recently purchased a lot of 4 briars and I am wondering if I should dedicate each pipe to certain baccy, like one for Va, one for burley, one for English blends ect. I am still experimenting with what I like and don't like. I really like flakes and really dislike (no that is too kind, I fucking hate!) oriental blends. Your recommendations or suggestion will be greatly appreciated!

The only pipes I switch up on are one for Aro's and one for English/Virginia's. I don't really go for Aro's but if I do that only gets smoked in a certain pipe. I don't really stress the others but maybe someone with a better palate switch's on English and Virginia.

it depends on your preference. i am learning that different styles of pipes (length, chamber diameter and depth, even curvature) like different styles of tobaccos. hell, you might find one bowl that smokes, say, nightcap all day long, but really won't burn any other English worth a damn. but it is YOUR learning curve.

do i think it is worth dedicating? yup. do i think you should worry about it now? nope. by the time you can tell what your preferences are, you will have added more pipes (we are weak, it will happen), and you will know enough to clean any ghosting out if need be. focus on learning technique, enjoying the experience, and trying to notice any differences in the bowls you have now. and have fun!

I not only dedicate a certain pipe to a certain type of tobacco, I dedicate pipes to a specific blend of tobacco. I have 5 pipes that I only smoke Penzance out of, 2 pipes that I only smoke FVF out of, 4 that I only smoke DH Night cap, and 5 that only smoke GLP Sextant in. I also have pipes that I only smoke English in, some that I only smoke VA, some VA/Per, so on and so forth. So yes I say dedicate pipes to certain types, and then down the road to certain specific blends.

Same as Hosh, since there are only a few tobacco's I smoke regularly, I keep a few pipes for aro's and a few for non aro's but none specific for a certain blend. Aromatics seem to burn a little wetter and the casing can leave a little remnant as far as flavoring so I keep those separate from the non aromatics. That being said, I don't differentiate from blends, just rotate the pipes especially if I'm smoking them on consecutive days. This allows the woods to cool down and rest in between smokes. I'll smoke a pipe all day but after the day, I won't go back to that specific one for at least a week. G1

I dont really smoke a whole lot of aro's anymore.. its occasional at best... I've got two briars that I keep set aside specifically for them.. the rest of the pipes get everything else...

Selecting which pipe to use really depends on a lot of factors.. the first thing I consider is time.. If Im looking at smoking all day, Ill pick up one of my big bowls.. If Im looking just to go get a 30 minute smoke in.. I grab one of the small bowls.... if its a flake.. I know which pipes I have handle that better.. vs a ribbon cut.. and which pipes handle that best.. etc..etc..

but whether its an english or a virginia or an oriental..... doesnt really matter to me.. or if its one blend or another.. (I smoke a really wide variety of stuff.. and am always trying something new... I couldnt keep enough pipes on hand to dedicate one to each of my blends if I tried...I'd have to move out of my office to make enough room :))....

I tend to dedicate one for aro's(it's been over a year since I have smoke an aromatic) and two to english/ non-aro blends. Not really much to it, Unless you are a pipe snob like some on this thread ;)
