Ok so I went out and got a Roku 3 yesterday. I have a Netflix account and signed up for Hulu Plus too. However I can not stream 2-3 shows that we really want to see, but it says I could stream it Web only. So is this a free trial deal or are there things you can not get on Hulu Plus?

Thanks,

I've never used a Roku (I have an old logitech Revue google tv unit that still suits my most of my needs) and not really familar with hulu plus web restrictions. I am not surprised if there were some restrictions, but someone else might have a better work around. This is how I stream web content on my tv:

- My google tv unit has a web browser, it sucks, but it works. Sometimes I need to change the device code in the settings so the browser thinks it is running on a computer, but sometimes that doesnt work and I think hulu fixed that workaround iirc.
- I recently got a small device called chromecast. I don't recommend going out and buying another device and I only got this because when it was released it came with 3 free months of netflix which existing members were allowed to use, so after you subtract the cost of the three months of netflix the device was pretty cheap. With chromecast I can stream any browser tab to my tv. So with a site like hulu I just set it to stream the tab and then set the video to full screen. Gets around any web only streaming I've come across so far.
- downloading the show to your local computer and streaming it to your tv from there. This can be a longer discussion and I don't know if roku is setup to stream video from you local pc
-some shows stream episodes directly from their own website

There might be better solutions for you out there, unfortunetly I have never used a roku, but if I have some time when I get home for work today, and I remember to, I'll do a couple searches to see if I can find other solutions for you.

We have the Visio version of roku boxes on all our TVs...

We primarily use Netflix and the HD antenna.... But also signed up for Vudu, Amazon, and Hulu to get the free initial trial when we first transitioned away from direct tv...

We only use Vudu now... Of the three, we found it the easiest to navigate.. It's selection was just as good as Hulu, and better than Amazon (IMO)... Etc...

Vudu for some reason takes a little more bandwidth than Netflix.. But gives me the option of watching in 420, 780, or 1080 HD.. So I can go with a lower bandwidth option if the connection is slow.. I don't recall Hulu giving that option... Could you have a bandwidth issue that's preventing you from streaming?

jmatkins,

I use only Apple TV's, so I cannot account for the Roku device, however I do know that Hulu has a licensing agreement on some shows, that for whatever reason you can ONLY watch via a web browser. I stopped looking for things through my browser and adding them to my queue for that fact alone. I just do a search on the Apple TV and add it that way. I know when I had an Xbox, the same exact thing occurred there.

Your not alone on this, and it is very frustrating. If you do have some sort of web browsing capabilities on the Roku, then you might try what MoJo suggested.

Good luck.

Pretty much what it says. HuluPlus has some shows which can only be streamed through a browser (not PS3, Roku, Smartvs, Apps etc.)

Ok so the Vizio does it allow you to surf the web? have you tried going to Hulu.com and stream for there?

why do you need a chromecast if you can just stream from laptop? Just stream for the laptop and you have no issues.

not sure if this is what you meant, but your comment at least made me think to mention this, one thing I used to do was hook my laptop up directly to my TV through an hdmi cable or whatever works with your laptop. Also, if the shows you can't stream are on basic cable, an antenna might allow you to watch them if you get reception. I get NBC, FOX, CBS, and ABC in clear HD from my antenna.
