  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I think its just a matter of preference...

I prefer lucite.. mostly because all of my meers and my 2 favorite briars have lucite stems.. so it adds some commonality..

if you tend to bite down on the stem with much pressure at all.. you may prefer vulcanite though.. in my early pipe days I cracked/broke a couple of lucite stems just from clamping down on them too hard with my teeth too often.. Ive never broken a vulcanite stem...

there is no "better", per se, just preference.

myself, lucite whenever possible. i rock the little rubber nubbins on all my stems for comfort as much as protection, so no worries about the hardness of the material for me. plus, the long term maintenance is so much less on a lucite bit.

whatever you decide, though, it is a great pick up. turns a disposable beater into something that feels all gron up and stuff. ans is STILL a disposable beater. o)

Hmm.. I guess I'll go with Lucite also, because I ordered 6 of those rubber stem bits a few days ago. My Stanwell has a few teeth marks, and I haven't used it a lot, so I guess I bite hard enough to damage the stems...
