  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

After you break the seal, any humidity holding integrity that Tin or can had, is lost.

Time to get some mason jars, my friend.

As for re humidification I don't see any problem in adding a small boveda until you reach the desired level of dampness you want. That's my very unprofessional opinion.

I keep my pipe tobacco in mason jars as well. I personally see no need to humidify them at all if you're storing it in a tightly sealed mason jar & in a cool/dark area of your house (like a basement).

IIRC bovedas are generally too wet, even at the lowest Rh, for pipe tobacco. that said, i keep all my sample baggies from here and there grouped together by type, each in a snap and lock container, with a boveda in each, and it works well.

also, jar what you ain't going to go through in a short perion.

also also, try just smoking it! you'd be amazed how much flavor (sometimes moreso that out of the tin) is in dryer pipe tobacco.

also also also, if you want to do it delicately, i have read that a low shallow bowl covered with a warm damp towel can work wonders. possibly multiple applications, but still...

so, the short short (too late) is go ahead and try bovedas, as most of us have some on hand anyway. in the future, plan on jarring up anything you ain't burning within a week.

Mason jars for prevention and if that's not enough they sell little humidifiers that work well.

If it's too late, spread ur baccy out on a paper plate and lightly mist with DW from a spray bottle. A long time piper recently told me that and it works great.

If you throw a pack in the jar just keep it in a couple days and pull it out. You can reseal the jar and shake it up. The humidity will level out through the jar.

Thanks guys a lot of good info here, I remember my dad used to cut a chunk of apple and throw it in but he didn`t really ever have tobacco sitting around he was a serious daily pipe smoker! I only smoke a bowl here and there. My Dad ended up getting sick and stopped smoking and sent me all his stuff, nothing fancy a bunch of old Dr. grabows and a real nice pipe stand that he made himself, when I get time I`ll have to post a pic on the show your briars section.

many older grabows are great smokers. and as an inheritance I'm sure it'll be a great experience

Try not to use anything organic, it introduces bacteria and mold spores. It probably worked for your dad if he went through it fast enough but otherwise if you are celaring it it creates problems.
