  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

This started out as a guide to the makers smaller label, cheapo, and house-brands, but expanded to include pretty much any cigar made by another company other than what is obvious by the label, especially when not widely known (some might be common knowledge, so I stress that I am still a noob!). It's obviously incomplete, so additions and corrections are welcome!

........ expanded to include pretty much any cigar made by another company other than what is obvious by the label, especially when not widely known .....

I think there is value here. However, I always have a problem with these investigations. Specifically, I cannot get past the words "made by". I have absolutely no idea what that means in any cigar industry context, because it means something different to everyone. Which of this sampling of attributes would qualify a cigar as "made by":

-source of tobacco (growers, brokers, fields, etc?)
-blended by the namesake of a company (or one of his/her master blenders?)
-made in same factory as some of that company's other cigars? by same rollers? rented room in a corner of a separate building of one of the factories?
-lent their name to a cigar at one time and little, if anything else?
-originated a blend/cigar and then spun it off or sold the blend/name/label to someone else?
-wholly or partially owned subsidiary?
-distribution assistance only?

Not trying to be a dick. Really. I appreciate the list and think there's some value there. But this industry frustrates me no end and it is impossible to coexist with any assumptions for very long.

Good points, @Dave - not being a dick at all. It's especially a problem with Altadis/GC stuff, because they have other manufacturers make cigars for them. And with tight-knit companies like J.C. Newman and Fuente, it seems impossible to untangle it all. I just went by references I've run across, claiming things like "made by the same people who brought you Brick House" or whatever. I'm assuming that means the same factory, the same blender and/or rollers, and presumably the same tobacco sources.... but who knows? I've seen references to cigars made in one factory, but "overseen" by someone from an entirely different company. Who knows what that means. So, all to be taken with a grain of salt....

AFAIK, "Made By" refers to the factory and/or blender that oversees the production such as Don Pepin, Fuente, Miami Cigar, etc.
