  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I am thinking about taking my pipe instead of cigars on saturday hunting bears, but when I sit in my stand, I can smoke 2-3+ cigars in a day of sitting, How many times can I smoke my pipe in one day without doing any harm. This may seem like a stupid question but I heard several times to only smoke one once a every couple days and rotate pipes, yet I see some guys smoke the same pipe relentlessly over and over every day.

I often smoke the same pipe twice in a day with no ill effect. Cobs are also quite resilient to being over smoked.

I thought Bears had a pretty good sense of smell?
They do, but I have a theory, I know that deer will come to find out what a smell is and I know that bears will do the same, this summer I was sitting on my porch at the cabin smoking a cigar and a bear walked up behind us to see what he smelled, he came within 30 feet of us and was sniffing the air the whole time. Some of the old timers used to say if ya want to see deer, light a cigarette and they will come to see what the smell is and they always shot deer. besides, Its a day away from work and supposed to be relaxing.... as long as I dont answer the calls from work:mad:

I would suggest a wind cap as well so you don't burn out whatever pipe you take. Some days I smoke the same pipe 3 times. Doesn't seem to matter. I give it extra rest for a few days

I can't wait, I'm so excited to go on my hunting trip this year. Leave Dec 3rd for TX. Was thinking about the cigar smell thing also but am not that worried about it. Never been bear hunting but it's definitely on my bucket list.
Just bomb stogie bear...same thing :)

Aromatics may bring em in! No pipe advice but good luck. PAs bear pop has definately boomed in the last couple years.
Good point. I can't imagine a bear resisting the smell of some Molto Dolce.

I'd bring at least two pipes, Griz. With cigars, if one gets damaged to the point where it can't be smoked, you can swear under your breath and then light another one. If you drop or lose your pipe, you're done for the day.

I'd bring a couple of cobs, just in case

Can you tell a difference between resting and not resting a pipe? I tend to smoke the same pipe pretty often and can't tell a difference between smokes whether it has rested or not. Is it bad for the pipe to smoke days in a row?

I'm bringing beers and baccy into my next hunting blind as a test. I used to chew tobacco, and I dumped a ton of deer with a dip in yet I never thought about using it as a smoke break.

From personal experience, I get about 2 (maybe) 3 rounds on a pipe before I get the wood too wet and a sour taste comes through. Caveat though, I smoke fast and am my own worst enemy in terms of overheating my pipe.

I'm far from an expert, but I think this may be more of a longevity of pipe life issue than an immediate taste issue. That continued heat/moisture without a chance to dry could lead to increased chances of rot/burnout/cracking/splitting.
That being said, there definitely is a concern of "souring" when it gets too wet...
Like mentioned above, I'd bring two and at least rotate between days, or just grab a handful of cobs.
