  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Can you judge a cigar from one stick?

Hey guys,

What say you? Can you accuratly judge a cigar from just one stick? I have 3 Ediction De Silvo's headed my way. But I was thinking of asking you guys out there if anyone wanted to do a stick trade, or maybe a several stick trade. I would really like to get my hands on a Nice Opus X. But then I thought can you really judge if you like the cigar after just one?

I have no Opus to trade to you, forgot to mention that. Trading 1-2 cigars for me is a waste of money when sending via priority mail cost $4.55 to ship.

Sure you can get lucky with that 1 cigar will be exactly what that cigar vitola or marca is suppose to be. But you can not accurately judge a cigar by 1 stick as a general rule.

cool, I'll just have to order up a couple here soon then. Several would be a nice addition to the humi's anyways. Thanks

IMO, bad cigars are kind of like hitting your thumb with a hammer ... it really only takes one to decide never to do that again.

Deciding whether a cigar is "OK", Pretty darn good" or "Not tonight honey, I really need to smoke another one of these fine [insert brand here]" ... will require you to smoke quite a few to determine the proper category.

So in the persuit of science, I'll send you a nice OpusX to start your search.

I guess that I still have a lot to learn. How do you guys decide if a cigar is humi worthy? If you buy a cigar and go shit that sucks, do you bother buying another? I'd say screw it. But If you buy a stick and it rocks you'd buy another or a couple then a box or three.

Tedski your the man, But before you do Is there a big difference between a Opus X and a Nice hemmingway, or a Don Carlos?

Do you guys do that sort of things a lot? Offer to help in the learning? I mean I have never had a group of people be so generous with knowledge, and in offering to sample. Why do you guys help out like that?

Young Grasshoppeer:

The answer to your quest lies in the smoke, and only from your examinations will you be able detemine its quality and/or to be able to distinguish between cigar brands.

Most importantly, these are your obsevations......

Two hints: Keep an open mind & enjoy your cigar!

When I smoke a particular cigar for the first time, I pay very close attention and take generous tasting notes. While I would hesitate to proclaim anything I've only had ONE of as "the greatest ever", I don't have any problem labeling a cigar a "turd" after only one stick.

Donk, you could make a snap judgement like that, but you'd be doing yourself and the cigar a disservice...I try to buy 3 of everything. One to smoke now, one for later, and if I really enjoyed those two, one to sit down for a while longer...

Here's how I look at it. If I'm looking to try a cigar then I want about 5 sticks of said cigar to give it the best shot possible. Between those 5 cigars I figure I should be able to give the cigar a fair review, so to speak. However, even if those 5 just don't do it for me, it doesn't mean I won't come back to them at some later point.

Especially when you are new to the hobby remember that tastes change. Because something doesn't do it for you now, doesn't mean you won't like it somewhere down the line.

The short answer is, never condemn a smoke based on a single stick.

Donk, I would have to agree with the majority so far. And with Randy in particular. There is a lot that goes into the enjoyment of a cigar; what you had to eat just prior, the mood you are in, what you might be drinking at the same time, etc. As a "for instance", my first Padron X000 sucked. I've come to really like them and found that I drinking a cola at the same time doesn't work for me.

Are you usually right when you decide you dislike a cigar after the first one? Probably, but you really should try a few before you swear off of them for sure.
