  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

how have you upkept it do far?
I empty it when done completely, blow through it to get out any bits that might be in the stem, run a pipe cleaner through it till it comes out clean, run the pipe cleaner around the bowl to pick up whatever soot it can. Thats been it.

How often are you smoking that cob?
Ive smoke it three nights in a row. Tonight being the fourth and the first time I tastes ash from the get go. I tasted it in the end last night.
I pulled the filter in the stem and it looks clean. No build up of anything.

My only thought is it may be the filter. I haven't used a filter in a long time though but I bet it might pick up flavors.

Yeah, even though cobs are pretty resilient, you may want to let it rest. If you're going to smoke one bowl a day, I'd probably pick up two more cobs and rotate them. Or give in 100% now and start collecting briars. LMAO

Or, at the very least, pick up one more cob and rotate the two. Especially if you're smoking fairly moist tobaccos.

If you don't have any, pick up some nylon bristled pipe cleaners and run them through the stem and shank.

MO Meerschaums "seconds" grab bag is a great deal to build up a quick rotation too. Especially if you are experimenting with different types of baccy. 10 pipes for 30 bucks, and every one in my bag was perfectly smokeable, just minor cosmetic "defects"

Have you used any cleaner through the stem and shank yet? I saw you mention pipe cleaners but I didn't know if you were using pipe sweetener or everclear, etc.

Yeah I vote sweetner or shine on your pipe cleaners periodically, swab with a dry one afterwards and let it dry 24, also another vote on cob seconds, cheapest and easiest way to start

I meant just the pipe cleaner wire thingy. No chemicals to clean it, just run the thing through and done.

You need to use a sweetener or some grain alcohol to clean out the shank and stem. It will get skunky if you don't do it every so often.
Good to know. Ill get on that.

BTW... that grab bag deal is 10% off right now ($3 savings) so 26.95 for a grab bag of at least 10 pipes. $8 shipping and done. Thats a deal and then some (avg to $3.50 a pipe).
