  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I enjoy cleaning up estate pipes so my pipe collection has grown during the last year of pipe smoking. I, however, only had one pipe rack that held a measly 6 pipes. The rest would start organized on a shelf and my desk, but would end up scattered all over the place. While a fancy display case would be very nice, I would rather spend the money on more baccy and pipes. That and none of my pipes are anything special, just tools for smoking tobacco. Off to Home Depot I went, and this is what I came up with.

In hind site, I should have just purchased a 2' x 4' sheet of peg board as this one is already near capacity. When this one is filled that is what I will do and then I'll just put these two cheap plastic ones out in the garage. When I go that route, I think it would be a neat idea to cover the peg board with pipe related art or advertisements and then just poke holes through it where needed for the peg inserts.

I really like that set up - great idea! My only question/concern (before I totally steal your idea) is if the metal screwdriver holders that you're using will scratch the pipes. But that really is brilliant.

Do you mind me asking what you paid? (ballpark)

So the question of not letting the hook/rings scratch the pipes (or wear on them over time) has consumed my thoughts. I found a bunch of vinyl-coated hooks, but never the tool rings that JustTrotIn used (and which makes the most sense to use). But I kept looking and then, during one of my searches, I stumbled upon a couple of forums where people were asking about pegboard hooks for their firearms. PERFECT, I thought, since gun owners hate to get their firearms needlessly scratched up, just like pipers. No one really had an answer until one person suggested the perfect solution - heat shrink tubing!

It's cheap, can be cut to size, and would definitely stay in place once it was shrunk. I may also try heat shrink wrap/tape as it might be easier to wrap the tool holder than to cut the tubing.

Either way, it solves the problem (for me, at least) on preventing contact between the stem and the stainless steel.

Oh, and there are so many awesome pegboard accessories, too. Shelves for storing butane and lighter fluid, parts bins for the lighters... And search Pinterest for pegboard projects and there are more ideas that you can use for pipes. Hmm... maybe a contest for the most creative use of pegboard for pipe storage will be coming...

This was mentioned before and would be an easy way to cover the metal and comes in multiple colors to choose from.

The actual dip one can be a little pricey but the spray cans you can find at most pepboys now and have a ton of colors. If you go to there actual website you can see all the colors they offer. Most can's are only about $5. If the material wears off you just reapply, the dip will last longer than the spray.

I thought of the same stuff, too. I also have a bunch of liquid electrical tape (stuff is AWESOME). I'll experiment with it. My thought is that it is pretty thick stuff and may close the hole too much and make a tight fit for the pipe stem. But a single pegboard hook is so damned cheap that I'll try it.

*THIS* thread right here is why this forum is so awesome - a group-ming doing problem resolution!
