  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Just starting out w my pipe. It's great for smoking the last of my nubs when the fingers start to burn! Picked up some backy to try out I just pulled a big pinch out shoved it in my pipe and lit it up. Burned well first few puffs then kinda died out didn't smoke very well after that. I packed it down about half way threw but still burned kinda crappy any suggestions?

The baccy was only a buck for the pouch and if you send in 4 upcs and 3$ they will mail you a wooden pipe =)I'm hoping my job of choice comes through if it does I'm going to scout out a few estate pipes and razors

Pipes are tricky. Check the thread seagarr started when he first went down that road. Lots of good advice in it.
One thing you should know is that pipes need to be re lit...a lot. Its just the nature. 2nd is that packing is an art form and once mastered will help a little with re lighting.
I will not pretend to know a lot on the subject. There are countless brothers here that can fill you in on it.
What I will say is that pipes are much more relaxing than cigars for me. And with the little one soon to be there will probably work well since you can put it down and come back to light it without a lot of harshness like a cigar.

Starting out error on the side of a looser pack. You can always tamp it down if it's too loose. Perform a charring light, light the pipe then put it down and let it go out so it chars the top. Lightly tamp (always tamp lightly) and relight your pipe. Now you are ready to smoke. Try to sip the pipe. You will not get the great clouds of smoke you are used to with a cigar. Relights are normal. If the pipe goes out, lightly tamp if needed and relight. Remember to sip. If you puff like a freight train you will burn the crap out of your tongue. Welcome to the piping side!

This is actually really great advice, that also happens to pretty much encompass all you need to know about smoking a pipe. Piping really IS that simple... Of course if when he says tamp, you ask tap what (insert joke here)? Or when he says char, and you read chair, you might need a little more basic instruction lol.

Watching a couple of YouTube video's really helped me. But what a video will not show you is the feel you need to load your bowl for the tobacco you are loading. So I 'll repeat JustTroItIn's advise to "error on the side of a looser pack."

I prefer my zippo with pipe insert. Then bics, and finally matches if I can. The re lights were also an issue if you wanna call it that, but you get over it. I don't worry much about the packing, just put some in there, check my draw once it's where I want it, I light it up
I also really like my pipe Zippo

I think we are on different pages - I thought you said you were looking for a RaZoR? A DE in razor speak is a Double edge. Go back and look - I am sure you typed that - of course, it could be my bad.

I will 2nd this. Don't overfill the lighter and use only Zippo low odor fuel and you won't get any fuel flavor in your baccy, at least I don't... I also trim the wick down so my flame isn't too large either.
I haven't used a Zippo in some time but was talking to a dude who puts a small bead of Vaseline between the case and the insert when assembling it. He swears that there is less fuel loss and that his lighter works for longer. If and when I get one - I am going to give that a try - just thought I would through that out there in case one of you all wanted to give it a whirl.

And, if you're still finding some trace aromas or flavor of the fluid, let it burn for a couple of seconds before bringing it to the pipe.
