  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Xikar stopped accepting butane?

On Christmas I received a nifty Xikar Allume from one of my wife's cousins. The "silver" single flame model. All of a sudden, a couple of days ago I went to purge and refill and the strangest thing happened. Absolutely no gas sounded like it was escaping from the valve and when I pushed the nozzle of the butane can down, I was immediately sprayed with the suff all over! After dawning a pair of snowmobile gloves to keep my hands warm from the liquid butane shower I was afraid would come again, the same thing happened. The lighter is acting like the valve is plugged and won't fill even the slightest bit. Any suggestions before I begin the return process? I'm happy to have the opportunity to get it fixed or replaced, but I sure would like a quicker fix.
Thanks for any suggestions, and yes, the bit about the gloves was made up for dramatic reasons ;)

Get a new butane can. Maybe the nozzles are not compatible. Happens to me all the time. And is why I have like six different cans

I eventually had the same issue with my Xikar. I was still able to refill it but not without getting butane everywhere. I don't have a fix for you though I replaced mine at the B&M.

Well, it looks like a return is going to have to happen. I'm using the same can as I've used a few times before, so that should rule the can out. I even grabbed my backup can just incase, no dice. I tried to fill it again, going slower and paying closer attention to what was going on. The butane is leaking/spraying from all around the fuel level port and dripping down the inside, I can hear it sizzle from the air vent areas. Pretty bummed out since it was a gift and still quite new. Oh well, hopefully soon I'll have a story about how great Xikar is about handling warranty work.

Not to ask the obvious, do you have the lighter turned down to the lowest setting before beginning to fuel?

Xikar = unconditional guarantee. Send it back instead of trying to figure out what the problems are with it and it sounds like the fuel hose inside has either come off or it could be other things. I fix lighters all the time and if you have a guarantee like Xikar gives out...easy fix to send it back.

Yep, jet "power"(?) turned down all the way. No problem at all to ask what's considered obvious. I overlook the obvious more often than I care to admit;)
I'm very happy about Xikar's repair/replace service. It hopefully turns a potentially aggravating experience to more of an inconvenience. And a slight inconvenience at that!

I keep mine upright and purge, then flip over, crank to low (-), then try to fill. Sputters and spurts or nothing at all. Ronson fuel. This can worked before...

Well, I finally had some time to get the lighter packed up and shipped back. I got an email from Xikar on Friday saying they are replacing it and getting a new one sent back. So far, so good with the warranty service. Hopefully it won't be too long to get the replacement, not like I don't have all kinds of other options

Holy balls! (Wait, can you say "holy balls" on the Internet? Ah, who cares, I'm going to say holy balls.) Holy balls! I just checked the mail while getting ready to catch my flight and sitting comfortably nestled in the standard bubble lined envelope was a Xikar box with a new Allume! That's pretty incredible, I feel a heck of a lot better about purchasing some of the pricier products they offer. Good show, Xikar!

Im a little late to this thread....but next time, just swing by your B&M shop that sells Xikar lighters, ideally the one you are trading in, and grab a new one, give the owner of the shop the old one and let him ship it back and get the replacement sent to the shop.

I've traded in my lighter 2x already, without issue. Might not be the best lighter, but THE best warranty in the game.

I've actually done that with my jetline lighter that I purchased through the local B&M. I turned in the malfunctioning one, then few days later gave me a replacement. Xikar customer service is top notch though. It's a good feeling knowing you might be paying a little more for the quality, but shows they stand 110% behind their products.

Best advice I can give You to avoid getting plugged up fil line. Use good quality lighter fluid, like a 5X or 7x filtered. Trust me, it's worth it. And in my DuPont Xtend, I only use their fluid, I've never had a problem using the right fluid,

That's some really solid advice! The nearest Xikar shop is about an hour away, and the last time I was out they were all on clearance so I don't even know if that's still an option for me. (Enter sad music to encourage sympathy and accompany the following sad face ;) )
