  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

    Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I've never used anything other than a soft flame disposable or wood matches. However, I've been thinking of getting something a little classier in appearance and have been seduced by IM Corona lighters (Double Corona and Old Boy). I suspect I'll buy one or both.

I've had a brushed Zippo since 1981 but never used it for cigars. When I found out about the inserts, I just ordered one of each type (torch and soft flint) to try out.

Djeep is great for cigars and pipes. I have a couple torches and pipe soft flame lighters, but I use the Djeep almost all the time. Cheap. Dependable. All-purpose. #therevapproved.

I love using a torch. Like one said before, I get the entire foot glowing before I even take the first draw to get it burning. Never touch the flame to the foot and I take my time to keep it as uniform as possible. I feel this is the best way to not have to do maintenance later through the rest of the stick. For me, cutting and lighting the cigar is almost as enjoyable as smoking it.

I no longer use the match or soft flame. I've just found that it takes too long and it's really hard to control the toasting unless you have zero air movement around you. That or you end up burning the wrapper as you're toasting.

With a torch, I'm able to get an even toasting of the foot without a blacked wrapper all around the foot. It makes sure I have a very even burn all the way around.

Matches may give a more traditional, slower toasting of the foot, but I just find it impossible to do and it takes me like 7 matches. A torch does me right every time.

I have a Xicar double torch I use if I am outside. When indoors I usually use a BIC. I have used matches a few times and they just aren't convienient nor feasible unless smoking indoors. But if I am ready for a cigar it's whatever it takes to make smoke. I do feel it is very important that a proper light is important to getting the best out of a cigar.

Is a Bic lighter consider adequate for a soft flame? I know that the fluid is different than butane.

Up until a month ago, I used to just cut and fire it up with my torch while puffing. The things you learn after 8 years of puffing. Thanks @ZippoGeek

Lately, I've been cutting, and toasting while not puffing and have noticed better results. I'll try toasting it before cutting soon. It's unfortunate about zippo's and their fluid. They are so old school and awesome, it's truly a shame that the fluid can ruin the taste of the cigar.

On Bics and similar, nothing is preventing you from angling the lighter so the flame is farther away from your thumb. I use them without issue along with disposable, adjustable Scripto lighters. I just got the two inserts for my 1981 Zippo - a soft and jet and, other than slight fit issues, they work OK too and allow me to use my old Zippo again. I ordered a bottle of Zippo's fuel to see how it compares to the Ronson I used for ages. No question that Ronson fuel stinks. Yesterday, I ordered an Old Boy from smokingpipes.com. That the flame is angled for pipe smokers is not an issue for me. I'm also interested in getting either their Double Corona or, if I get lucky on a low bid, Dupont Ligne 2.

On the whole toasting thing, while I do it almost always, I was quite amused by watching a number of documentaries on the making of cigars and noticing the workers who are smoking through out, never, not once, toast their cigars. They simply light them and smoke them.

Yeah, I just hope it's not too big a PITA to own it. If I like it, I'm gonna have to look into an adapter for it because I'm not likely to spend the money for those little Dupont butane canisters.

Single torch, because I smoke outside all of the time. I own a soft flame lighter and will use that to finish lighting if I somehow mess up my toast and just need a quick touch up. I used to use matches, but I just burn through them too quickly because of the wind.

No matter where I'm smoking there always seems to be a wind, so matches, soft flame or even a single jet are out. Quad torch for me, but what I'd really like is one with 5 jets, lol. And no, I do not puff. Even with a quad, it can take a full minute or so to get the foot nice and glowing. Sometimes when I'm really anal, I'll wait for the cigar to be properly lit before cutting or punching.
