  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I think I have become a piper

Been smoking pipes almost exclusively this past month. Just got into it and love it!

Today I had a CC with a buddy of mine. Nice day out and he's just getting into cigars. Figured he was ready for a stronger CC (party short)

Man it did nothing for me. I couldn't believe it. I've been a cigar smoker for 5 years now. I have a bunch of sticks in the cooler.

They're gonna be getting lots of age I think

I really only want to smoke my pipes. I get so much enjoyment out of them as compared to cigars. And it's wayyyyy cheaper per smoke too which is a plus.

Bowl on way to work. Bowl on way home. Maybe a bowl before bed.

Anywho, I blame all of you. And thank you at the same time :). You guys have turned me into a piper!

I've been finding out how much I enjoy piping a little more as well. I do love my cigars and won't give them up. I've noticed I enjoy them more with company of friends though. Piping I enjoy more by myself in my backyard and takes me away from the stress and crap from the outside world even if it's just for 5 minutes.

Another edit: somehow my clothes don't stink of smoke after I smoke my pipe, just with cigars.

I smoked cigars for over 25 years, so long that Royal Jamaicans were still made in Jamaica. In the past 9 months I've really come to enjoy pipes just as much especially if I don't have an hour to smoke - which is usually the case. I still love my cigars but pipes are now an equal part of my smoking hobby.

I find pipes take the lead when I'm in a hurry. With a cigar I want to sit and enjoy, but I don't always have an hour +.
This is a big reason why I am leaning toward the pipes as well. 30 - 45 minutes for a full bowl is awesome. If I need to smoke it in 3 shifts, so be it (this came in handy during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and now it will come in handy during the finals as well! Go HAWKS!)

Depending on the way it's packed, the humidity and how quickly you smoke you could probably get near an hour of piping from one bowl. A few weeks ago (probably like 2 or 3) I packed a bowl and had it just shy of an hour of piping. Only 1 or 2 relights and the initial light. It was great.

I really tried to become a piper. I bought nice tobacco. I bought seven or eight pipes. I watched videos on packing and lighting and cleaning and whatnot. I just can't get into it.

Pipes are a thing of class. They require more patience, more skill, more preparation, and more care. Things I lack, apparently!

I just kept at it. And even posted here and shared my progress and thoughts. YouTube is a big help. Patience and practice is key (that's something I really lack as well). Plus, I had some help from my local B&M which the store's manager is a big pipe guy and took me to school in Piping 101. He kept pushing me along and said packing your bowl alone is a science because every baccy is different consistency.
If you're getting that frustrated, put it down for a bit and then get up and try again. Of course if you need any help, were all here to help as best we can over a forum.

After a long time smoking a pipe (natural, non-aromatic mixtures of almost all kinds), I've just discovered cigars. Haven't smoked a pipe in more than a month as I explore this new world of tobacco.

It's been a little challenging, because I'm comparing deliciously 10+ year aged tobacco leaf and extensive experience with fresh cigars which I'm not familiar with at all. At first blush, cigars seem harsher, less refined, and offer a narrower flavor profile than expertly blended pipe tobaccos. To say nothing of being more expensive.

But there is something about cigars which fascinates me and keeps me exploring. It feels like age will do good things to cigars, and I can't wait to get a glimpse of what that might be like.

There are lots of tobacco varieties that aren't used in pipe tobaccos and vice versa. Cigars are a different experience, but not inherently better than pipes. I enjoy doing both.

Don't worry man, this is my third try and I'm finally enjoying it. First time was when I was 19, then 29, now I'm 39 ;)

When I first got into pipes, it was almost exclusive for several months and similar to you, was getting less from my cigars than I wanted, and just kept on with the pipe.

But after a few months I switched back to primarily cigars. Sometimes I smoke a pipe in my truck because it smells good, cigars tend to leave a lingering stale odor. But if im relaxing with a drink on the deck ot in the garage in winter, its a cigar.

I feel like the pipe resets my palate for cigars and vice versa.

But yes, one of the biggest benefits I've had is my cigars now last much longer. Instead of having an after work cigar and being pressed for time, I can light my pipe when I leave work, and if time allows, finish when I get home or just dump it. It's not like ditching a $10 cigar halfway through.
