  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

What got you started

Hello brother's and sisters of the leaf. Today I have a question for you. We all have a story as to why we started smoking a pipe. Weather if it's because your granddad did and you came across some of his estates or perhaps because it reminds you of a special memory. For me it has to do with the brotherhood that surrounds it. I would love to hear what got you started. I love story's big and small so let me have it. No story is better than the other in regards to this.

Back in the mid 80's I was doing a historical event and while roaming around I stopped at a booth where a guy was hand carving briar pipes. He kept one clinched in his mouth the whole time, an oom paul, and it just got the best of me. I paid a very exorbitant price of $75 dollars for one of his oom pauls and still have it and smoke it once in a while. His name was John Lakatosh. In my head I can still see his pipe nestled in his long beard.....

This forum and the enablers here got me started as well as a very close family friend who is basically a brother to both my brother and I. None of my friends smoke pipes just cigars. I was intrigued by it and have been wanting to "try it out."

So I started with a dr grabow pipe and some toasted vanilla and black cavendish tobacco, watched some youtube videos and had plenty of brothers here to help push me down the slope. I also was schooled in pipe 101 by the manager at my local B&M who is a piper. I got my first real briar from the shop.

I signed up for the newbie pipe trade here, @K Williams smacked the daylights out of me in it then a sh*t ton of mason jars from @cgraunke show up at my door to add to Carnage.

So after a lot of baccy, now I think 7 or 8 pipes and another on the way for the 2015 BOTL pipe, I'll say I'm enjoying my pipes.

I would smoke the occasional cigar in my late teens and early twenties but it tapered off to maybe once a year after getting married and having kids. Not quite two years ago my good friend @Rustabletoken from Texas sent me a humidor and sampler pack of sticks for Christmas. This got me into cigars on a regular basis. After several months of smoking cigars he convinced me to try a pipe. I had the initial growing pains most noobs do of tongue bite and crappy tobacco choices but stuck with it and started to smoke better stuff after getting educated (I was a member of the fish site then and had not yet found BOTL). I went from smoking a few sticks a week to smoking the pipe daily and maybe smoking one cigar a week.

Cleaning up old estates also hit a chord with me. The estates have tapered off a bit due to the nicer weather and other hobbies but once I hermit up again for the winter I will be back to scrubbing. @Rustabletoken sent me a big box of his ebay finds to clean up for him (he was kind enough to send me some Texas Bourbon and a bunch of cleaning supplies along with the pipes) and I have a few of my own waiting for winter.

This is the enabler and me at Famous Smoke during this years Cigarfest.

When I was a kid we would go the the American Legion league (Post 22) baseball games quite often in the summers. There were always two old fellas sitting about 5 rows up behind home plate that each puffed away on their pipes during the entire game. I always loved the smell and wanted to sit as close a possible to them. I vowed there to take up pipe smoking as soon as I could. Of course when I turned 18 I purchased a Kaywoodie Drinkless and some cheap cherry blend in a pouch and packed away, and puffed away, but never really enjoyed it. My thoughts turned to cigars and until just a few months ago never really learned about proper piping practices. I was completely hooked again after my first couple of antique shop estate pipe clean ups. Something about bringing back an old trashed piece from the past and turning it into a usable item again really appeals to me.

I started smoking cigarettes in HS and when I joined the army I played with cigarillos.I tried a pipe after about 2 years in the service but never had the time to go to a B&M so the only tobaccos I tried were otc's.Skip ahead about 8 years and I came across CI and popped an order for a bundle of cigars,Dark Sharks,I thought they were pretty good but I had no humi.I went into a B&M looking for some good sticks to try, trying to expand my palette so to speak, and they had a Rossi up front on clearence.Well, that went home with me as well as 2oz of bulk blend and a new pouch.Unfortunatly I really didn't have a clue as to packing and tamping. So alot of toung bite and gurgling and well piping was more of a side note.About a year ago I picked up a package deal from CI ,5 cigars a humi and cutter and lighter, that got me back into the cigars and I was on the fish site trolling for knowledge.About 4 months ago my wife asked me about my pipes,I still had 2 or three but no tobacco. So off to the B&M and a cpl oz of Burley Delight and I was back in buisness,,,not,,,I came back to my BOTL both here and on our other site CB and with the advice I found have learned how to pack and what to look for in tobaccos as well as pipes. Now I have to remind myself that I still have my cigars,These pipe blends just taste so much better !

Proper piping practices are definitely the determining factor between a good pipe and bad pipe experience

As an intern in college one of the engineers I worked under smoked cigars. He got me into those while being an intern. Fast forward a few years my buddy and I would smoke cigars and while smoking one day we thought "hey, lets try a pipe, it smells amazing". There was a family that would walk around the neighborhood when I was younger and they all smoked pipes and it always smelled great. So we hopped in the car and went to the closest B&M and bough pipes and some tobacco and some basic tools... Got back to our smoking spot and tried it out.. Man it was horrible. Couldn't keep them lit, burned hot because we tried to keep them lit... awful, so we gave up. Fast forward another 5 years at my bachelor party last weekend, that same friend suggested we try again. So we brought the pipes with us to the cabin (I am amazed he still had the pipes) and bought some tobacco. Did a little research on properly lighting, lit mine up and bam! it was perfect. Tasted and smelled sooo good. My buddy on the other hand had troubles. Needless to say, I was hooked and he wasn't too pleased. I haven't had a chance since last weekend to smoke a pipe but I am excited to keep going.

I started smoking cigars in my early 20s - I was more poor than I am now and smoked factory-second Royal Jamaica cigars when they were still made in Jamaica. Great sticks.

My dad, in his mid 40s at the time, smoked cigarettes, but I remember him smoking a pipe when I was in elementary school. I remember one photo in particular of him trying to kill the rampant bamboo in the yard with a pick axe all the while a Dr. Grabow clenched in his jaw.

Since I was now enjoying cigars, I thought I'd try a pipe. It was a disaster. Without the benefit of Internet resources for tutelage, I didn't know what the hell I was doing and couldn't pack the pipe correctly or keep the pipe lit . My dad was not much help because his advice was "just put tobacco in there and light it" which probably explains why HE gave up on pipes too and turned to cigarettes! I put the pipe down and continued on an extensive pipe journey that included long-gone Cigar Boom brands and my trusty Royal Jamaica Seconds, until a hurricane wiped out the Jamaican tobacco industry.

Fast forward 30 years to just before Father's Day 2014. Still smoking cigars, leaning toward Tatuaje with my Royal Jamaica dailies replaced by Flor de Oliva torpedoes, I'm visiting my parents who live nearby and my dad, now in his mid 70s and a little forgetful, asks my mom where she "hid my pipes" because he wants to smoke them. My mom reminds him he hasn't smoked them in 40 years and she threw them out 20 years ago. Dad, perplexed, lit a cigarette and lamented the loss of his pipes. What I sensed was a great Father's Day gift opportunity and I gave him a Dr Grabow and some tobacco (Lane 1-Q, on the advice of Sophie D, the hot clerk at the B&M from which I purchased the tobacco) the very next Sunday. I did a little Internet research on how to pack and light, info I passed onto dad. He lit up the Grabow and it smelled great. Father's Day success!

However, it smelled so good, it tempted me to try a pipe again myself 30 years after the first dismal failure. To make a make this long story short, I loved the experience so much that by Father's Day of this year I accumulated a while lotta pipes and a whole lotta tobacco and a whole lotta buddies who share the passion for this incredible pastime. Ironically, as hog wild as I jumped into piping, I still spend way less than I had on cigars - which I smoke only occasionally now - since my pipe rotation (mostly estates and cobs) is set and pipe tobacco is so much less expensive. I find pipe smokers much more laid back than my cigar chaser friends. And most importantly, I can visit and smoke with the old man on his porch and enjoy his company sharing a pipe:

I bought my first pipe in 2009 to nub cigars with.

I guess I tried to get started into pipes cuz the cost of cigars and the time to smoke. Something to light up for 10-15 minutes and not wasting a cigar by tossing it.

I failed at it miserably. Had bought another cheap pipe and hated it. It was honey cured and recommended to me. I could never get that burning honey taste out of my mouth.

The a local shop had a huge sale. 50% off everything non tobacco in the shop so I bought a peterson system pipe. Again I hated it. I watched videos on how to pack. Read forums, blogs, articles and still struggled.

I guess it was around st party's day a few years ago and another local shop had their annual peterson sale so I went. Thinking I'd check out the pipes.

I asked the shop owner question after question about packing and breaking in the pipes etc. Then in walks a customer with a big nording freehand clenched, the shop owner says, "ask him". So I did.

He looks at me and says, " pack it and smoke it." So I bought a Nording freehand. Went home and grabbed a tin of peterson university flake and I packed it and smoked it. And it was wonderful. I was hooked. Now hundreds of pipes and pounds of tobacco later I love this hobby/addiction/obsession.

You are never allowed to use the word "hobby" again in conjunction with you and pipes.

It's a short story for me: A friend sent me a pipe and some tobacco. I now have probably a dozen and a half pipes and a 48 qt storage tub full of tobacco that causes my children to look at me strangely when I call it my cellar.

I'm still really a cigar guy though. Pipes are nice--and way more fun to shop for than cigars-- buy they're my side chick.

One man's tub is another man's cellar

I guess it is coming up on almost 3 years now for me. I had just split with my ex and was getting settled into my new apartment. I was getting ready to place an order for cigars as the sticks I had in my humis were thinning out since I now had more time and desire to smoke. I still hadn't found this site yet and hadn't been educated on what good cigars were and was ordering cheap bundles off of Cigars International. When I popped online to start shopping a piping starter kit was right on the home page that included a Dr Grabow, a tin of Dunhill Green mixture, a pipe tool, and some cleaners for something like $30. Looking at the deal reminded me of the old rancher I had seen only once as a young child. He walked out in the yard I was playing in and pulled out his pipe and lit it with a match. I was fascinated at the time and still remember how good the smoke smelled. I immediately added that to my cart. I started watching youtube videos on piping to try and get an idea of how I should go about packing and lighting and came across Jason Dagner's channel. I started taking notes on the tobaccos he was trying and started placing more orders. I don't smoke my pipes very often due to issues with my mouth chemistry I think, either that or I still haven't gotten the hang of properly smoking a pipe, but I still really enjoy it. I currently have 8 pipes and a bunch of 'baccy and have recently discovered how fun it is to go to antique stores around me to look for estate pipes in good condition. There aren't many pipers out here so I can find really good deals.

Simply because I wanted to. My grandpa smoked a pipe, but not in front of us. But I remember the smell and flavor of his old pipe, we'd play with one he tossed in the toy bin when I was little.

Got into cigars, figured I'd give the pipe a try. Had attempted previously but never figured it out. Bought a Dr Graybow and some flavored Walgreens tobacco and never figured out how to smoke it (pre YouTube days) but after coming here I found the information I needed to get going.
