  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Little dilemma

About 2 or 3 months ago I purchased a pipe starter kit, after about 2 or 3 weeks I decided I just didn't have the patina to learn how to smoke a pipe properly. So I sold my kit here on BOTL. Now I wanna learn, so my question is what is baccy that yall would recommend? In the short time I gave it a go I really enjoyed drew estate Central Park Stroll, but I do know there are plenty of more choices.

What was in the kit?? Assuming you still have a pipe, tamper and pipe cleaners??

Get yourself a sampler of a little bit of everything. And if there's something you don't like you could always pay it forward or trade with someone too.

Piping takes practice. I'm still trying to pack the pipe perfectly. It's all a learning curve that'll be worth it in the end.

Go on pipes and cigars and buy little samplers of each for little 2-3 bucks that's more than enough Baccy for you to try and practice. You can also buy a little cheap starter kit there too. With a corn cob pipe heck I think there is a three pack corn cob

Time and patience, check out the what's in your bowl thread or ptom thread, most start with aros because they smell great but usually don't smoke well or taste like they smell

I'd universally reccomend starting with non-aromatics from quality blenders like dunhill, and I'd avoid flakes to start as they present their own challenges, get a mm cob again, I really like legends and rob Roy's for starters they have a smaller bowl which is more manageable

Pipe newbie trade is another good place to start

Awesome! thanks for the info. I thought about the trying the newbie trade but didn't want to step on any toes if someone happened to research and see that I sold a kit a few months back.

Good stuff from Whtwtrman79. 3 (more) rules for new pipers:
  1. Dry it for an hour, man. You're not experienced enough to smoke wet pipe tobacco.
  2. Don't buy aromatics. You're not experienced enough to smoke them yet. I promise.
  3. When it tastes bad, put it down. Puffing like a train on a wet, overheated, and mispacked bowl is the quickest way to sell your new piper sampler.
After you have a couple wins under your belt, disregard everything everyone else says and pick up your own style.
