Just MY opinion, but the AR series isn't built for 308 that well. Some higher tier makers can pull it off (KAC), but the majority of them have mad issues.

You're right. The funny part is the Armalite Rifle was originally designed around the 7.62x51.

There are good 308 rifles out there, just don't expect to get one at the price of an AR-15.

I built a 7mm-08 on the DPMS platform (lower receiver is PSA). Only real tweak needed was adding an adjustable gas block. Works well.
