I've been trying to visualize the saddle stem myself and can't really see it looking right without altering the dimensions a bit, more like the little apple that was posted in the poll thread. Thanks for explaining it better @Grrrrr609!
(but, I can't see your attachment)
I'll try to get a pic next to other pipes.

Yuppers. I just don't think without changing the size of the shank, it wouldn't look right. But then the bowl would look out of proportion.

Edit

But if we lengthened the shank and shortened the bit it just might.

From TNB when originally discussing the request for saddle bit:
"[Ours has] a .250" flat section behind the button before they taper up so at least by doing that [we] don't find it uncomfortable to clench"
Not sure if that aids anyone's decision making.
I'll also try to put the TNB prototype next to a Savinelli for reference.

I don't know what it needs. But I can't picture that pipe with a saddle bit and it looking right without having to change the lines somehow. I need to quit thinking before I've had my coffee.

If all the pipes posted so far or that I've seen, only two look good two more with a saddle.

This one doesn't look very authorish to me, but I do like it.

This one looks like an author and the trim piece breaks up the lines to make it look nice. However if like the trim piece to be far less bulbous.

All that being said, I still don't know which way I'd like to go. I think the potential of a fugly pipe being achieved is very easy with trying to mess with the classic lines of an author. If the Carver says it's a good clentcher as is, which is always a concern for me because I clench a lot while smoking my pipes, I think I'd like to see a classic shape with a brindle stem.

Yes, I'm flopping worse than a politician. And taking a safer decision of not ending up with something I'd pass on.

Keep the discussion coming fellas!
