  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Help me assign my briars

So I've got four briars, and I'm thinking the best designation for them would be

A) English/Latakia
B) VA/Burley
C) VaPer
D) Cavendish/Aro

Does this sound about right? Am I missing something? I've still got three cobs, as well, if perhaps the Cavendish/Aro could find a better use. Also, I've yet to actually see anything suggesting a separate pipe for perique blends specifically so maybe I'm over thinking that part. Your thoughts and suggestions are most welcomed and appreciated.

I'm hoping I don't fall that far down the slope for a looooong time.
That is just the edge of the slope. Wait until you start trying different types of pipe wood for certain types of blends, or you decide you want to start exploring all the variations of a single sub-style like Virginia/Periuqe plus Oriental. That should give you a dozen blends to try before you move on to stuff like VA//Per plus Burley (or Latakia). Then you get in to trying blends to discover which of the different "oriental" leaves you prefer. Then you have to explore as many versions of that as you can. Oh, and then hunting down blends with Syrian Latakia instead of Cyprian Latakia. Then, you can start looking for vintage or consignment tins of out of production blends. Some of those can have literally decades of age and cost over $100.

Edit:
I forgot things like trying to collect one pipe for each style from a pipe shape family or collecting estate pipes from manufacturers that are out of business. I've read of one guy that is collecting pipes from German manufactures made during the cold war. That is diving off the slope.

Goddammit. I've edited this post twenty times trying to get a gif in here but it won't work. Just imagine the cronenburg head exploding from scanners and move on.

You are pretty much dead on (referring Back to your first post) there is a really slippery slope and the thing is a 95° angle ! You can also stay where you are at and be perfectly fine. it all depends on how much you budget for this obsession , er a... "hobby".

Just a thought, is there a certain type of baccy you smoke the most? If so, you might dedicate more than one pipe to it. I own about ten pipes total, with three dedicated to english/ latakia blends. The rest are va, va/per, and burley pipes. I smoke these blends 5 to 1 vs English these days. I don't notice much ghosting if any with the VA or burley blends, but I clean pretty regularly with everclear. I don't smoke aros, so that's not an issue with me.
Don't short yourself on available pipes for a favorite type. If you only occasionally smoke a blend/type, use a cob.

Good advice. If only I could choose. Still working my way through your sampler. Ha!
