Can this be repaired?

It looks like it can be sanded out, go easy on the heel, don’t sand out more than is absolutely necessary. I would probably sand it out polish it with the micro mesh and wax it without restaining it.

My original interest in this post was how to remove superficial scratches in the briar. A name crudely scratched into the pipe makes me wonder what stories this pipe could tell

It’s called Advertising! Make it look like the previous owner was famous.
And the pipe was made and crafted by shop teacher Leonard Skinner. Priceless!
